I've started learning Illustrator, and had a question i cant seem to work out.
Is there any way to set the amount a point will move when you direct select and use the arrow key?
becasue it seems to jump way more than a pixel. I cant get some points to line up, or get a line to sit vertically or horizontally.

I've been through all the preferences i can find, and set all units to pixels but no luck. I've turned snap to point and grid off, and still no luck.

Can any one help?

You didn't say which version of Illustrator. But under CS it is under preferances. Ironicly it is the first choice. Check under General, Keyboard Increments. This setting uses the default general units, which can be changed under Preferances --> Units. Illustrator also allow you to specify the units directly in, most dialog boxes, performing the conversion on the fly to your current unit selection. So you can enter ".001 in" or "1 px" Use: Shift - Arrow to move 10x your user Increments.

I think you'll find, when zoomed in, the vector element are falling well below 1 pixel in size. I would guess Illustrator is considering 1 pixel, as rendered at a scale of 100 percent. So illustrator is moving the point 1 pixel, the vector artwork is just much smaller and more accurate then one pixel.

That leads me to what I forgot to mention.

Illustrator allows you to set the keyboard increments to a fraction of a pixel. Try something like ".001 px". I am not sure how small you can go in 10.03, but CS2 will let be set a value of .0001. At which point I can no longer see movement at the highest enlargement.
