Ello, ello, the old memory's playing up again.
So there I was twiddling with some new buttons I've been making for my site when, I realise that I've forgotten a technique I've used a number of times.
What I want to do is link a layer mask with the layer mask above it. Both layer masks in question are unlinked in their own layer.
Gentle reminders gleefully received.

I think what you're looking for is : Grouped layers.

Thanks poi, but that is not it either, as far as I can see anyway. I have found a sort of work around to get by with. If you can imagine two layers with a mask on wach. The top mask moves downward to reveal the text in its own layer, while at the same time the mask on the other layer moves downward to hide the text on its own layer.
I know, I know, a picture is worth a thousand words, I'll put up an example a bit later.
As I am switching to image ready, I'll do the animation as a tween on each layer, this should have the same effect, I think.

Isn't that accomplished by clicking on the line between the two layers and grouping the layers?

That's what I thought too at first hyper' , but that is not it either. That's called a clipping mask, I thought there was an option there to link the masks together as well but alas no . Ah well, there y'are I'll get there somehow, thanks for trying though, 'tis appreciated.

You ONLY want to link the two masks together?

I think the simplest solution would be using two layers as clipping masks, and linking those two layers together.

Thanks Mahjqa but that's not quite what I wanted.
As you can see here, I have two text layers with masks containing the same text, the top has a layer style.

The effect I want to achieve is for the top text to replace the bottom text in a gradual reveal from top to bottom. Like this:

I thought I could link the two masks together without linking the actual layers so when I moved the top mask to reveal, the bottom mask would also move to cover.
As you can see I found another way of doing it, but it still bugs me because I'm sure I've done it before
As a special surprise to all our readers here is a PS ToolTip I use often
When Firefox introduced that nifty little extension ColourZilla it made life a little easier for a colour sampler like myself to quickly nab a colour I like.
With Photoshop MMMmmm photoshop,,,, If I want to sample a colour anywhere on the screen, and not just in PS. I just click with the eyedropper tool anywhere in the current document while holding down the Alt key. Keep the Alt key depressed and move the curser anywhere you like
