..and so I somehow became infected by this file. I looked up some information on Google but it only returned with 3 pages with a bunch of useless information. Apparently it is some kind of mass-mailing worm. I found in the WINDOWS\temp folder wintemp.exe and deleted it after finding out what the associated files are from Google. Other files include:
WINTEMP.TXT
WINTEMP1.BAT
WINTEMP.EXE
DEBUG.EXE
666TEST.ZIP
WINSWAP.SWP
REGSVR.VBS

I searched through the computer for any of these but the only one I found was wintemp.exe, I think I found a couple instances of this file. Now it's left behind a heap of temp files that seem to multiply every few minutes. I can almost sit here and watch them multiply. I had a look in Add\Remove Programs in case it registered itself there but nothing. I also ran McAfee Virus Scan, Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D but nothing was found. I tried to delete these .tmp files but it says they are in use. So I booted into Safe Mode but alas, I get the same error message. Now I'm at a lost as to what to do. I've included a log from a scan I did with Hijackthis:

This is where a life disc comes in handy.
Ether the windows basedBartPE CD or some linux based one like Knoppix.
Check out some friend/familymember/neighbour who has an internetconnection and a cd burner. download the .iso files an burn them to cd.
Start the infected machine with the cd and clean up the wintemp mess. With the BartPE disc you will be able to edit your registry files so you can do a search&delete party in the registry

Some good resources:
Linux Rescue CD
911 rescue CD
http://www.911cd.net/links/ --> good collection of links about bootable/rescue cd's

God luck

See if you can go here in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and see if the wintemp.exe is listed there. If so, delete the entire key and then see if you can remove the files. If not, Rinswind 2th suggestion is your best bet. Or just do a complete reinstall

This seems to have some help too.

This website scans hijackthis logs and can point out some things to remove. It doesn't run on my PC at the moment though it is not the only one.

Have you tried running Adaware in safe mode? I've had that work for me.
Running msconfig to temperarly stop startup items can aid in the recovery process. Uncheck everything but your antivirus and firewall program for the best effect.

If you're looking through the registry don't forget HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WinLogon as well.

Thanks guys for the helpful advice. I attempted to try creating a rescue CD but the 911 Rescue CD decided it wouldn't allow me as it needed the latest version of a windows component that you receive when updating Windows (can't remember exactly what it was). Before I thought about trying other recue cd type alternatives, I realised what I should've done a long time ago. Restore point. Often the simplest solution is the best one. I restored the computer prior to whatever it was infected my machine and thus I was able to delete all the various .tmp files. Problem solved!

As long as you're re-installing anyway-

Why not try a different flavor? You'll be glad you did!
