Aside from NN 4.x, are there any browsers, any extensions, or anything that can understand LAYER and ILAYER tags?

And No there is nothing that will understand the layer tag anymore.
However there are lot of browsers who will understand the div tag.

The Layer tag is obsolete.

The LAYER/ILAYER are NOT part of HTML 3.2, HTML4.01 or XHTML 1.x specifications so forget them.

I see it says that IE does not support layers, but that doesn't really answer my question.

Wow, I hadn't checked the link posted by Rinswind 2th before. For sure there is some valuable infos there, but it hurts to see some 'Advanced JavaScript tutorials' with :

<script language='JavaScript'>
// ...
document.write( quote )
/// ...
eval( whichArray )

And no mention about event handlers, OOP, XMLHttpRequest, ...

If you don't already know these websites, I recommend you to have a look at:

• DOM scripting task force, and the websites of its various Task Force Leaders/Members,
• DOM scripting - Web Design with JavaScript and the Document Object Model
• and Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group to have a glimpse of what the future holds

BuilderQ: AFAIR, DIV tags with absolute positionning worked well even in NN4 and IE4. I might be curious, but why do wonder about the support of the LAYER/ILAYER tags ?

I was thinking of writing a bookmarklet that would allow other browsers to understand those tags.

There are perfectly useful and valid tags to use instead - why try to further propagate obsolete and proprietary code?

Psst poi the link was about the difference between layersand divs not about "Advanced Javascript" this site is probably as old as my grandma.

If i remember correctly Layers where very easy to manipulate and thus creating some nice animations with it. But nowaday htere is not much usefull info on layers left. Most has been rotting away.
