According to the text on that page, they... [quote]...hope to detect these subtle waves, which would alter the shape of a human from head to toe by far less than the width of an atom.[/quote] That suggests to me that the expanding waves you see are representative of the ripples being sent out across the universe like the surface of a pond (but in three dimensions). Of course, at the end of the animation, you can see a depiction of Einstein's description of gravity - the stabilised new black hole appears to be warping the spacetime in its immediate vicinity, like a heavy object on a stretched rubber sheet.
