Topic awaiting preservation: Basic post function (Page 1 of 1)

I was wondering if someone could point me to a tut that would show me how to create an "admin" page for a site I'm doing. All I need it to do is allow someone who knows nothing of HTML that could post simple updates and upload pics into an image directory.

I'm not sure if what im asking is really difficult or relatively easy. Any help would be awesome!

This isn't the most complciated thing to do, but it isn't exactly the easiest either

There are a few things to consider -

1) What language are we talking here?

2) How will the information be stored? Database, texet files, etc.

3) Are we talking multiple users?

Knowing what language you plan to use, and what kind of experience you have with it will be a big help in pointing you in the right direction.

PHP would probably be easiest since the site is PHP based.

To be honest, there are only a few text fields that I was thinking about having him edit...

I was thinking of the main page text, his show schedule, and I'd like to eventually integrate the blog section to look like the rest of the site.


And no, it would only be 1 person. And unfortunately I have 0(zero) experience doing anythign of this sort... :-)

Yank's series is somewhat helpful (this is the last, bring-mysql-and-php-together article). Should provide a rough overview of how to go about creating strightforward click-edit-save functionality. As for other tutorials, I suggest zend.com http://www.zend.com/zend/tut/ whenever possible.

Sorry if this makes anyone cringe here, but there is always the free Content Management System (CMS) solution, which allows you to waste very little time on things you don't really want to get involved with (whether it's design, coding, etc.)

May I suggest you take a look at Joomla! ?

I don't know that much about PHP and MySQL integration, but I'm trying to learn, and I thought about this: would it be possible to create a separate database with particular authorisations just for him and create one entry for each field you would like him to be able to edit and place the corresponding PHP queries for each entry in your website where you want him to be able to edit the texts? Or is that a stupid idea?

I don't know how that would work, really, I am only new to all this, but am very keen to hear what you all have to say about my "first PHP integration idea" (blimey that was hard work)...

Seriously now: kudos for trying, and for trying to learn, it's always a positive thing.
I don't have a direct answer.
To me, the task is trivial so I don't put thinking in it, but the advice of getting an existing lightweight cms is good (I have to stress lightweight, no need for a huge complicated cms there).

And honestly, I haven't fully understood your proposal... for the most part, the idea of keeping things simple sounds good,
but I must admit I don't understand the details of what you suggested kimson.

So no, nothing silly there, no revolution either, just common sense, perfect for coding.

And btw, a biologist and friend of mine told me that girls in general
are able to keep theyre concentration longer than men.

That might be why people make careers out of doing web design and development

With no experience whatsoever, you probably need to choose one of two things -

1) dive in and learn to code php/mysql

2) get one of the many prefab solutions out there

Search google for CMS and see what comes up...

I just gave an html developer some training on PHP and they found that WordPress was really easy to setup. Creating a new template was easy and the administration interface was easy for the standard user. WordPress is just a little blogging tool, which handles image uploads and posting of "Stories." This is often enough if the goal is to keep the site fresh.

A full blown CMS might be more than you really need.
