I wanted to try creating an entire layout without even one table.

there are no banners or logos yet as I just wanted to focus on the coding.
but I will be working on that tonight or tommorow and will update then.

You're missing a content type declaration, this shouild always be in the meta information, especially in a flat html site.

It does tentatively validate, but doesn't render properly in Firefox.
You've not got your DOXTYPE on the first line of your HTML code, I would drop the xml declaration.

May be a little late to respond but the navigation is a little of in Firefox... :-)

Multi browser compatibility is something I still wrestle with myself.

Your alignment off on Safari as well (2.0.3)

Also, you should consider moving the "read more" link closer to the blurb.
