Topic: Any decent (free) graphics software out there?

Hey all,

Just wondering if there is any good software out there that is free that can be used to make simple graphics for website sort of stuff. Just header images, maybe logo's that sort of thing.

I guess photoshop type software but doesnt have to be on the same level (wouldnt expect it to be if its free!)

Is there any software like this out there?

But for using PhotoShop since the version 3 and having had to use Gimp for about 6 months my opinion on it is rather harsh and biased. I wouldn't say Gimp is 'decent'. IMHO Gimp's GUI is an horror ( at least on Windows as it's not an MDI application and opens a new windows that appear in the taskbar for every single toolbar/view/panel you open ). I could never get used to it.

Gimp is excellent but it's gui is a nightmare for most windows users, especially if you're used photoshop beforehand (or any other graphics tool for that matter.)

However GimpShop is pretty excellent, it's essentially the same as Gimp, but has the Gui as close to photoshop as possible.

I would also recommend Paint.Net I've used it a bit before and found it very easy to use and incredibly powerful for a package that comes free.

Second Paint.net, suprisingly good. Gimp is more powerful but it's got a much steeper learning curve particularly if coming from PS.

Blaise: Thanks for sharing GimpShop. I'll try to think of it next time I have to use Gimp.
And Paint.NET looks pretty neat. I'll give it a go to see if it's fast and has as many shortcuts as PhotoShop.

I say gimp, but I came from paint shop pro. PSP is an 80 dollar program and in my opinion gimp makes it look like mspaint.

PSP is corel software isnt it? I never could get into corel software for some reason

Microsoft bought Creature House and it's Expression 3 vector graphics progam some time ago. (Which was free for both Mac and PC first, then pulled on PC, then Mac version disappeared...)

They've built an entire setup of Microsoft Expression programs since then, all of which are available as community technical previews. If you're not bent on avoiding Microsoft products, they may be well worth looking into. I know Creature House Expression 3 was one of the more polished vector graphics programs I had seen when I first tried it.
