Topic: Linux vs Windows

Guys...i know this topic has been discussed extensively

I have worked with windows 4 quite sometime....

I now have slackware 9.0 running with windows.... i finally decided to find out whats all the hype abt Linux..... ( ignorance is no excuse )..

Still in my initial stages...and am already impressed with the Desktop technology....

Am therefore calling out to the Linux Guru's ....to give me a few (if not many) tips,tricks,functions .....that i can do with Linux that my dear old friend Windows cant

Linux has man pages that actually tell you how to do things.

Try reading the man pages for find, awk and grep. Three very useful utilities not avaliable on Widows. (Actully they have been ported to windows, but ar not part of a standard install).

Try the following commands in a terminal window:

# man awk
# man find
# man grep
# man -k network

yeah, get REAL familiar with the terminal window commands. You are going to be doing a lot with it. If you get a book on linux, the only one that I can recommend is O'Reilly's Running Linux. Good stuff there.

psaux is one of my favorites just to see if something is running.
locate and whereis are good ones too

Why did you install Slackware 9.0? I think it's up to 10.2 which has some nice features. However, I just switched over my desktop linux to Unbuntu

I can read all day long what xgamma is...but that code didn't make sense to me. dig? That's what I wanted explained.

Step away from the Linux jokes! It's too early in the day!

I've dabbled with Ubuntu and Kubuntu recently and although I found the wifi setup very frustrating, (I understand this isn't really a problem with the OS's) it was a pleasure to use. You can basically do everything you can do on a PC, and I find it generally more aesthetically appealing, which is important to me if I'm using a computer all day.
