Topic: Bringing a computer case on a plane ? (Page 1 of 1)

I'll have to bring my computer case ( and the rest of my computer ) to Helsinki this WE. Usually I just take a laptop but that won't do it this time.

Since I don't have any cardbox/luggage big enough to fit it in safely, I wonder what is the best option.

I guess I should simply bring the computer case as is to the chek-in and let the luggage handlers wrap it themselves and eventually put some nice 'fragile' stickers on it.

Any other idea or experience ?

Would it be possible to take it to a parcel/postage store and purchase packing materials there? We have some here in the States, I'm not sure what you have up your way.

The airport baggage handlers might handle your hard work and precious electronics with care. Then again they might play hand-case with it. I'd say your odds are about 50-50.

And if you take it on the plane, there's always the chance of Samuel L. Jackson appearing to say "There's a muthaf@%#ing case on the muthaf@%#ing plane!"

I'd consider removing the hard drive and taking it on as 'carry on' then reinstalling it. Just don't put it thru the metal detector. Back up CD's ??

If it isn't a big tower case, you might be able to carry it as carry-on luggage, I suppose.

Last time I shipped a machine that way, I had a big enough suitcase that I stuffed with socks

That's a medium size tower, i.e : ~ 21x50x48 cm. The top side is a tad bigger than a regular keyboard.

Gothmatum: I fear that placing the case in a big parcel will "anonymize" it and luggage handlers will be more likely to take as little precaution as they do for regular luggages.

NoJive: Good point. Regardless of how carefully ( or not ) the case is packed, I should take the HDD in my back pack. I've never had a problem carrying HDD through security checks.

Tyberius Prime: Indeed having the case as carry-on luggage would be the safest option. I should go to the airport soon enough to go ask the security and check-in dudes if that's possible.

Well, I don't know if they're available over there or, if they are, where you could get them, but you can get carrying straps for your desktop case that'll take keyboard, mouse and cables as well, giving you the complete package in an easy-to-move bundle.

Hey, it looks quite handy. Too bad they don't ship abroad.

One thing I've considered to move the computer case ( and myself ) around is a skateboard. I could put the skateboard in my luggage, along with my sleeping bag, clothes, cables+mouse+keyboard. Once on the ground I could put the cardbox of my TFT and the computer case on the skateboard and off I go.

Well, as I said, you could find them overseas. I know Antec sells them with its LanBoy and portable case series'.

Can't you just borrow or rent one in Helsinki?

on the asm website today.

Tyberius Prime: I'm going to the Assembly, not for work. It's gonna be tough to borrow or rent a screen there. Such things are precious ... Hopefully some Opera people could bring an extra screen for me since at the exception of a big set top box they only bring some laptops and small devices, but nothing sure. [update] Actually, that gonna happen. \o/ [/update]

_Mauro: Nope, the deadlines are Thursday 3rd of August at 22:00 for the oldschool and individual compos, and Friday 4th of August at 20:00 for 'new school' and group compos. The deadline for the gamedev compo was Monday 31st of July.

As for the laptop, I have a 3yo one that for some unknown reasons run @ only 800Mhz ( instead of 1.6Ghz, I can't figure out why ) and have a crappy gfx card. Finishing Neja on it was a pain last year, and it was almost impossible to figure how it would run on the compo machine. My WIP is even more cpu intensive than Neja.

poi, thks again for the proposal. *something* was due last Friday anyway, I am about certain - for I was badly pissed and went through the compo rules about 20 times to find a solution -,
probably the tickets ordering, or subscription, whatever (? any idea about that)

Basically, for me, the code base (functions, generators, shaders, cams..), models and tune are ready, but the screenplay is near to non-existent anyway: I "know" how it should be, move, and feel, but I have to "grab my curved cam paths", arrange and time them - so anyway, with two big assignments starting, I am stuck - the other option would be no sleep until the deadline.

I thought it was clear that FF doesn't use the gfx card

Crappy gfx cards have crappy fillrate/bandwidth and thus affect even vanilla un-accelerated manipulations.

Anyway I'm using Opera 9 this time. Unfortunately so far I only have a few proofs of concept plus plenty of ideas on paper.
