Topic: Aptana the Web IDE

Hi there guys,

I know a few people here already are familiar with the mighty Eclipse as an IDE, and have probably forgotten all about the likes of Dreamweaver and GoLive (gag!). Well it's failry old news by now but Aptana which is built from Eclipse has been a joy for me to use of the past month or so.

Aptana: The Web IDE

It's free, it can be installed standalone or as an Eclipse plugin, and it's a dream for javascript programming, (X)HTML and CSS.

It works excellently with AJAX libraries already existing such as Scriptaculous, but you can also add your own, I'm loving the javascript auto-completion, which even maintains your own created objects and properties.

Has anyone else tried it out, and how have your experiences been with it?

I've also been using it for about a month, and I really like it. It does need a lot of work, but it's still an alpha.
This is going to be a really good editor when it's finished I think.

How's this for a bump? I'm being a good inmate by searching before posting questions, right?

Anyways, has anyone been keeping up with Aptana? I'm downloading Aptana Studio 1.0.2 now and it seems pretty nice. Does anyone else use it regularly? Opinions?

Seemed pretty good to me (y'know, aside from being a Java app) ? just don't use the HTML templates (yet).

Been using it a few months, myself. Pretty happy except for the occasional, annoying bugs. Wish I could turn off these damned quote autocompletions.

I've been pretty happy with it too. It runs a bit slow on my older machine, but not too bad.

Well, I like the installer for starters : that part is very well crafted.

Haven't used it enough to express more yet.

Well, I do not get it honestly :

Eclipse IS a Java app. And it's one of the very best pieces of software out there (for free).
Azureus/Vuze IS a Java app.
And it's one of the best bittorrent clients out there.

Actually, some of the best softwares I have ever seen are Java apps.


There is this "trend" to saying that "Java apps are unstable" : they are not. This is like saying that "websites are poorly designed on average".
It's a generalisation.

And the cause is : too many poor Java developers out there do not understand what they do.

Java is merely a tool - one can develop what they want with the tool, provided they know how to use it - it is so extensible that it is
easy to graft dll's and so's into it in order to extend capabilities to (sky is the limit). The only "drawback" I see to Java apps
is the VM "warming up" time.

A VM, in an attempt to be nice to users, starts a program WHILE STILL optimizing it's execution (it's called a Hotspot VM for a reason,
it finds hot spots and turns the temperature up gently at startup). That's the "lag at applets startup", period.

Past this startup phase, I have been doing and testing things with Java that outperform what I could do with any other programming language,
because of the added portability.

My 2 cents.

Every time you use a Java app, Beelzebub kills a kitten.

Azereus is a horrible Bitorrent client! granted there aren't that many to choose from, but uTorrent beats it hands down.

Generally I don't like Java apps, and I do often find them sluggish, my 2 cents, I'm with reisio here.

..And I am with Beelzebub and fried kittens. With bbq sauce.

I have used Aptana quite a bit, and even had feature requests and bug reports fulfilled. But went back to notepad++ because it was lighter over all...
Whenever I encounter an app written in Java, I do usually avoid it - not because of the app itself, but because java just seems so heavy and bulky...

It eats up too many resources.

I see your point about Java Aptana looks a lot like eclipse and is cool, and also eats up too much resources.

I'll get into the Java debate some other time, but I recommend you check my current app, featured in the site reviews,
and tell me how sluggish it is - there will be some sluggishness I can't avoid that really is due to Java windowing,
but there also is probably the fastest double buffer out on the web - and a fast set of filters (those ones are written in C code against the JNI api, so they make for
huge canvas that can be animated at will).

Actually, since I've been using it I've considered getting a beefier machine so it runs more smoothly. But that's the only bad thing I can say about it so far. And it really isn't that bad, it's just mildly annoying.
