I have searched a million times and tried everyone of the suggestions. Nothing is working. The Automatic Update install (yellow sheild) keeps coming back after every install. I've tried to install the direct download of the patch and still does not work.
I've tried the fix of renaming the .dll's and the one .sys file and it doesn't work. One reason is because 2 of them do not exist.
One suggestion from MS said to rename the following files :
nwapi32.dll to nwapi32.old
nwprovau.dll to nwprovau.old
nwwks.dll to nwwks.old
I have nwprovau.dll but not the other 2.
It also does not show up in my Add/Remove programs.
This is starting to get on my nerves!
Also, on another note. I installed FF2.0 and every once in a while, the drop down to change the search engines is not there. Restart FF and they sometimes come back.
if you have standard english version of xp pro, you could do this:
clean registry aggressively with what software you use (i recomend jv16powertools - not freeware, though - http://www.macecraft.com/products/ )
reboot, switch automatic updates off (optionally also the updating service)

It's XP Home Edition.
I've tried to clean the registry, rename the dll's and redo, reboot and do the express install, reboot and do the manual install. Nothing seems to work. About ready to just uncheck the stupid box and forget it.
There are 2 dll's and one sys file that are not loading so not sure what's up with that.
Uninstall KB923980 from Add/Remove programs and you'll be prompted to restart. Before you restart, rename a hidden file in your systems32 folder from nwprovau.dll to nwprovau.old then restart the computer. Once the computer starts back up, reinstall KB923980.
Hope that helps. According to a good dozen or so people, it should.

Man, I am gonna go back to purely lurking... either that or start drinking more coffee.
I don't remember reading any of that the first time I read the post. I knew I was tired but... geez I feel dumb.
Obviously, I just cut and pasted an answer for you without comparing.
Looking further, I have found a few other references to people not having some of those files, and of people not being able to see it in their add/remove program sections.... but basically end up with the same "fix" instructions...
What do you use as a registry cleaner? I've seen guys cleaning their registry with programs like CCleaner, only to find that it isn't fixed at all, when they use jv16.

didn't mean anything bad about it or against you. I miss stuff in posts all the time. I was just say, I tried it, didn't work
No need to not come around because of me Maybe I came across a bit strident but didn't mean to. Sorry about that.
Arthemis, I use RegCleaner. I'll look up jv16 and see what it's about.
No help here, but on the subject of registry cleaning - I found the 30-day trial of Tune-Up Utilities 2006 was pretty good for a one-click-does-all registry clean-up. Best run a couple of times from the main proggy though. It also has an option for defragmenting the registry.

No, no... I didn't think you did. I just was caught off guard at my own dumb assiness...
ok, that's good. not a dumb ass at all.
on the other topic, I have decided to just uncheck the option to install the freakin update. I've tried everything I can and nothing. MS was not any help either. Oh well.
ah, yes. I think i had some trouble with this one as well. It wouldnt install. But after a month the problem fixed itself. Of course maybe i did something i'm not aware of. The advice i gave above is still the best i have, hehehe.
