How do i embed video and make it unavailable to a viewer for file download. If i use <embed> or <object> the source shows the file name and the user can download the file. How do i hide it / make it non-downloadable so that the user will have to come back to my site every time he wants to watch the video?

Wat about DRM if you want to protect your files and IP ? But if you use DRM, prepare to endure the rage of all your visitors ... if you get any.

The best way to make sure people can not download your files is to simply NOT upload them in the first place. When watching said videos the files are sent to the clients in some way, whether it is encoded or not makes no difference. There are tools out there to decode/decrypt files.

The only "solution" left is security by obscurity. The question is: is it worth the effort ?

Anyway, welcome to the Asylum.
Enjoy your stay.

Perhaps look into streaming, also have you looked at using FLash to show the video like Youtube does?

Of course streaming is an option but it will NOT prevent people from grabing the files.

Yup, just to reiterate what poi said, if you put it on the internet, people will be able to download it, streaming or not. You can even use Flash to show the video, and people will still download it. In fact, I have a nifty freeware program that allows me to rip videos straight from YouTube into quicktime format so I can watch them on my iPod. You can guarantee that no matter what you do, someone out there will find a way around it.

Technology is awesome. And I mean that in every possible sense of the word. Try to stand in the way and you'll most likely get run over. Unless you have mountains of cash and legions of lawyers, in which case you'll stick around for a while until you eventually become obsolete.

So let's look at your problem again. Am I right in saying that it's not so much that you're worried about people downloading the video, it's that you're worried about people visiting your site once and then not coming back? If that is the case, the answer is simple: just give people another reason to come back. In most cases, this is going to mean providing new content on a regular basis. That's pretty much the only way to guarantee that people will come back. Of course, it has to be good content, but that's another story entirely.

Oh, and welcome to the Asylum.

Security by obscurity. I just know I'm going to sneak that into a conversation someday, nice one poi.

Adobe's Flash Media Server is a secure deployment solution.
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/productinfo/features/
It is unfortunately VERY costly - suitable for well funded enterprises but that's about it. Also - you host has to be willing to let you use a media server. Mine (DreamHost) isn't.

There are services that will host your media (NOT you site, just your media). Big names in this field are Akami and VitalStream.

There are alternatives. One I have seriously considered (but haven't used so no first-hand experience) is Influxis

Here's a list of some other resources:

Good luck.
