Topic: What is a good starting salary for entry level web designer? (Page 1 of 1)

Hey guys its been a while since I have posted here. I have been quite busy finishing up college and working this past year. I was wondering if someone with experience in the web design industry could give me an idea of what starting salary should be for an entry level web designer.

The job requires that I know PHP, CSS, HTML and Javascript. The job also requires that I be proficient with photoshop, Illustrator and dreamweaver.

Looks like they want a programmer and a frontend coder and a graphic designer...so you should get the salary of three people.

Unfortunately because they want you to do three jobs, that probably means you're going to get less than you should for just one of them.

If it covers what you need money for and/or if you can't find anything better ATM, then do it.

sound crappy but ATM the truth is that working somewhere is better than no where. The thing is that I am not sure what it pays.. I just got an email from them earlier today and they were asking me what I wanted in terms of salary. I was just asking here because I need the job for when I move and I didn't want to scare them off with to high of a figure

Don't know if this applies also in the US, but if the net salary is less than 2.5x your rent, you'd rather look elsewhere ... or accept the job and use the probatory period to find a better job while being able to pay the/some bills and not being stuck in the company for too long.

I usually have a goal that my rent will not take up more than 1/3rd of my monthly pay.

Apart from asking here, do some research on recruitment websites, and call up other web developer companies and ask for that information, some may be willing to help.

Ditto. I actually have the same 1/3rd goal.

But things changed a bit since I relocated in Oslo. Unless you go in the outskirt
which I don't want as I already had my fair share of commuting, rent are insanely expensive. Everything else here is just really expensive. My current flat is rather cheap and fits in the 1/3rd rule, but I have to move within 2 months. The next flat will certainly be more expensive. At least 15% more.

Not trying to hijack a thread, but I'm curious... For those who have that "1/3" goal (or something similar), is that 1/3 of what you take home, or 1/3 before taxes etc? (I realize taxes are a bit different depending on where you are, but let's ignore that for a minute).

Back on topic, if you're just looking for a reasonable ballpark number to throw out there http://www.salary.com/ can usually help narrow it down some. Can't always find the exact job description, but you can get close then round up or down some.
