Since there has been some discussion about Mormonism in another thread, and people said they would like to learn more about the Mormon religion, I thought you might find the this interview interesting.

Guy doesn't know which of the many sects of Christianity to join, so he starts his own. Now his followers constantly try to convert people to their sect. So illogical - if we put any stock in the ideas that spawned Mormonism, it makes no sense to join.

Most every sect, maybe. At the top (or bottom, however you see it), the religions probably started with hallucinations or actual supernatural encounters, depending on your interpretation.

The point, though, is that not all sects of Christianity operate in such contradiction of their own founders' fundamental values. Imagine evangelicals that never go outside, or baptists that think baptism of children is meaningless, or puritans that don't have their own bibles.

Thanks for starting this thread, hyperbole. I was pleased to learn that redroy was a Mormon because I've had few opportunities to speak people of that faith.

I just read the NPR interview and found it touched on a couple of things I wanted to explore with redroy:

1. Christ's divinity
2. Sacred texts other than the bible

Point #1 is *the* reason I do not consider Mormons to be Xians. I found it very interesting that you used all the same words for describing Christ's divinity in the other thread. You said, "We do believe Jesus Christ to be a member of the God Head and thus having complete divinity".

My understanding is that the bible claims Jesus is the one and only Creator of not just this universe but of the whole of creation. The article suggests that Mormons believe Jesus was only involved in one of many universes. How do you understand it?

I've always assumed that point #2 explains how Mormons can have a very different view of things when there are 2 separate texts considered sacred in addition to the bible itself. As I understand it there's the Book of Mormon and Pearl of Great Price. I was once told that if I were to point out any discrepancy between these books and the bible then Mormonism would favor these and view the bible as secondary.

Sorry, I don't mean to resurrect an old thread here but because I fell off the face of the earth a few months back I think I owe Bugs a response Sorry for the delay Bugs.

1. That's a tough one... It's my understanding that Jesus created our world as well as many other worlds. If those other worlds are solely in our universe or composed of other universes I don't know.

2. As of yet I haven't run across any discrepancies (with the KJ version of the Bible at least)... but I guess I would have too, before I would know which way I would lean.
