Last Dec. I bought a DELL. The configuration is

Dell Dimension (DIME521)
AMD Athlon 64X2
Core Processor 4200+
2.2 GHz, 1.00 GB RAM
PhysicalAddress Extension
Running w/MS XP Professional, sp2
IE 6
Norton AVP

Since I bought it the modem has always run for a while and then is not able to log onto any url. I get one of those standard Page Not Available popups.

The people at Dell have replaced the modem once but the problem continues and all they give me is the run around for 9 months.

My local tech man says that nothing can be done.

I ran MS XP Professional, sp2 with IE6 and Norton AVP
on my previous PC but I can not understand why this will not work.

Could you possibly help?

Hopefully,

Reinstall the drivers? Reinstall WinXP?

What's the modem chipset?

hold on, draw three steps back, and we might get to the right questions.

What modem are we talking about? A regular 56k, or a DSL or cable modem?
Either way, the modem is necessary fro 'logging onto any url' but that's about four layers up
from what it actually does.

If you have a 56k modem - have you turned on the speaker? Does it make the usual dialing and connecting noises?

If it's a dsl modem - do the correct lights come up that say you have a dsl link...

What provider are you using - is the connection to the provider established before you try to visit an url?

so long,

First of all, Thank You Very Much for taking the time to address this question. You have absolutely no idea what it is like to be caught in the Dell customer service scam. My state-NYS- is curently suing Dell for fraud on many levels.

What modem are we talking about? A regular 56k?
>Internal Modem: Conexant D850 56K V.9X DFVc

If you have a 56k modem - have you turned on the speaker? Does it make the usual dialing and connecting noises?
>Well, when I turn on my speakers I believe I remember hearing a dial up sequence.

What provider are you using - is the connection to the provider established before you try to visit an url?
>Yes, they are a local one called Computer.net. They are Very reliable local guys and have been very reliable in the past and totally checked out their modems in this regard.

Thank you Very Much again for you time and thought on this matter.

If you pick up a phone on the same line as the modem when this is happening, do you hear digital screeching down the line?

Ok...

So, how do you usually connect to the net?
Do you just fire up your browser (Internet Explorer/Firefox...),
and it automatically dials?

Or do you dial 'by hand' by 'starting' the appropriate connection and hitting 'connect'?

Anyhow, turn up the modem's speakers by going to your control panel, telephone and modem options, modems, Conexant...,
modem and changing the volume, so you can actually hear it dial and connect.

Also - does the little green pair of computers how up next you your clock when you're connecting to the net?

First off, profusive thanks to each of you for asking far more perceptive questions than I received from the Dell customer service over 9 months. Herewith my answers:

So, how do you usually connect to the net? Do you just fire up your browser (Internet Explorer/Firefox...), and it automatically dials?
>>No I dial up my isp and get the connection and then start my IE 6 browser.

Or do you dial 'by hand' by 'starting' the appropriate connection and hitting 'connect'?
>>Yes

Anyhow, turn up the modem's speakers by going to your control panel, telephone and modem options, modems, Conexant...,modem and changing the volume, so you can actually hear it dial and connect.
>>I did this and it sounds like a clean searching and then connect sequence.

Also - does the little green pair of computers show up next you your clock when you're connecting to the net?
>>Yes.

If you pick up a phone on the same line as the modem when this is happening, do you hear digital screeching down the line?
>>I just checked and I get the following when the modem dropped the signal:

......on the phone it sounds as if the signal has been dropped and the modem is automatically searching for a reconnect.
......on the modem icon status screen it shows that I am still connected.

I just ran a Modem diagnostic and it says, just as it always has, that all is just fine.
Does anyone know where I go to identify exactly what driver I am currently running on my Conexant D850 56K V.9X DFVc?

Thanks again for your thoughtful consideration of my ongoing problem.

ok... once you're connected, open up a comand line (start/run/cmd.exe)
and type 'ipconfig' followed by enter, and post the results.

Also in the same window try 'ping yahoo.com' to see if at least that works.

Then we'll see further

I was just over checking out the Dell website for my computer and I believe my driver for my modem is up to date.

Outa left field, but have you checked your "idle time-out" settings ?

I haven't used dial up for a long time but the settings should be in your connection properties under somewhere like "options"

Good luck

I looked under Options but could not find it.

If someone could tell me the steps to finding it I would be most grateful.

Thanks.

I checked my old settings for dialup and mine was 4 HRS

Ok, I did the change on the settings as suggested.

And yes we have dial up flatrates for people in the u.s. Our rates are flat rates.
