First off, profusive thanks to each of you for asking far more perceptive questions than I received from the Dell customer service over 9 months. Herewith my answers: So, how do you usually connect to the net? Do you just fire up your browser (Internet Explorer/Firefox...), and it automatically dials? >>No I dial up my isp and get the connection and then start my IE 6 browser. Or do you dial 'by hand' by 'starting' the appropriate connection and hitting 'connect'? >>Yes Anyhow, turn up the modem's speakers by going to your control panel, telephone and modem options, modems, Conexant...,modem and changing the volume, so you can actually hear it dial and connect. >>I did this and it sounds like a clean searching and then connect sequence. Also - does the little green pair of computers show up next you your clock when you're connecting to the net? >>Yes. If you pick up a phone on the same line as the modem when this is happening, do you hear digital screeching down the line? >>I just checked and I get the following when the modem dropped the signal: ......on the phone it sounds as if the signal has been dropped and the modem is automatically searching for a reconnect. ......on the modem icon status screen it shows that I am still connected. I just ran a Modem diagnostic and it says, just as it always has, that all is just fine. Does anyone know where I go to identify exactly what driver I am currently running on my Conexant D850 56K V.9X DFVc? Thanks again for your thoughtful consideration of my ongoing problem. Country Boy
