I think people are too busy so I am going to call back an old topic of mine and that is the quickie.

Again, get your collective heads out of the gutter and put that fabulous mind into Photoshop.

Rules: You have one hour of creation/manipulation time in Photoshop to make a sig. That's it! Take one hour this month and fall in love again with the BIG SIG APPROACHING forum!

Whatever you have after one hour, post it in the Quickie Entry Thread

Points will be awarded on originality, creativity and honesty. If I can tell that it is an unfinished work and looks like it could use like another 5 to 10 min, I will actually give bonus points as I will know you stuck to the clock.

Come on guys! Keep this great forum alive. Find an hour in your busy schedules and supply a sig!

Sig Contest

HAVE FUN!

Peace,

- Jung

This only took me twenty minutes or so, but I'm cheating really. It was a twenty minute search on an old hard drive just before I formatted it. I just wanted to "break my duck" and post something to get me back on track.

Ok, here's my first attempt, it took me 50 minutes and I had to log into IRC to get some help with GIMP

It's nowhere near what I wanted but like Tao said, 'I just wanted to "break my duck"' and I concur.

What I wanted to do was add a bit of outside bevel, and make the cracks more prominent, perhaps a more straightforward font would be better, any GIMP masters out there, please give me some tips!

I like the dark sidedness Blaise, but I bet it would be really hard to see on the other darker background. I haven't got Gimp open at the mo' so can't check other methods yet.
First thoughts are to increase the space between letters and then make the text thicker. This would not be too easy with that font though as it would loose some of the ornate decoration, and I like that font, it would be nice to keep it. Perhaps a graffiti-esque background splattered in a slightly lighter colour to help bring out the text when it is on the darker Asylum background?

This beautiful creature has been perched on the water feature in my garden every morning waiting for me to cut up the peanut butter sandwiches into tiny squares for her. I also cut an apple into quarters for the blackbirds too, they love fallen fruit.
Can't you just feel spring around the corner? The Blackbird should resume it's song in a few weeks time, marking territory and attracting a mate. They are busy at the moment chasing each other around the garden. You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.

I think they're a tad too big. I would say 60-70% should be ok.

Thanks for the tips Tao, I've realised that the sig has resized terribly, it's meant to look like cracks in the asylum.

When developing sigs how do most of you do it, do you create at original size or build big only to resize later?

I usually create at size. Resizing can introduce all sorts of unexpected quirks.

An hour, huh? I may have to give this a shot. Thinking doesn't count toward the hour, right?

I guess it varies a lot. I know a lot of great sig makers here do as Master Suho does and create at the intended finished size. Generally I large it up big stylie, although there are some styles that do not suit this at all, I always try to get to the intended dimensions before any animation work is done.
One thing you should watch when resizing by cropping is what algorithms you are using. I change the default setting to Bicubic Sharper.

Just made it under the hour deadline, had to rush though, I'm such a keeper of the law, I know where the line is, I like to stand on it, jump up and down and wobble on it.

Whipped this up after about twenty minutes of fiddling. I'm not sure what it is, or what it is supposed to be. I've been under assault by a particularly vicious cold for the past week, so I may not be thinking straight...

Wow, so after 19 days we have just a handful of inmates who are able to find one hour to fiddle around in Photoshop...

I think some shock therapy is in order.

Yeah, Jung, I feel you on this one - there certainly is a way to work around this, but I truely think
it involves some kind of... you know... Asylum wide shock therapy : to get inmates in shape for dusting off the ol' Arkham

Redroy, good to see you back here, I like the design of your sig, good "Asylum" feel to it.

Just noticed yours argo navis, well designed and executed.
Blaise I like yours too, the concept is fab but I think it needs a little something extra to make those cracks have depth. Perhaps a little lightened drop shadow if that's not too confusing, as rthe crackes are very dark to begin with. I'll fire up Gimp and see if I can find the effect you may be looking for, if that's OK

I have not actually entered anything yet as I am er, procastinating.
