I definitely have to find a new host..but are they all the same incompetents?
Their server crashed hard again, they restored the site but I'm locked out of any CMS (PHP/MYSQL) applications which means my blog for example.
Me (online): Hi, can't access my blog and same with FTP
Offshore tech support (after 10 minutes): Needs senior technician, will open ticket.
Email from them: Issue has been resolved.
I check..nope.
Me (email) - provide links and descriptions of problems - 1 page worth.
Email back from them: Here is your password for FTP and site is visible for us, nice wolf photo.
Me (Email) - I can see site too, just can't login...and I do know my password...
Flashback to about 2 months. Server crash. Folder with 50+ photos not restored when they restore site.
Offshore Tech Support 1: Sorry photos lost not in backup. Sorry for inconvenience.
one day later
Offshore Tech Support 2: Sorry photos lost not in backup. Sorry for inconvenience.
I pick up phone and talk to senior technician. Folder restored later that night.
Flash forward: Me - getting ready to slice my wrists.
So anyone out there have lessons learned from migrating tons of crap to a new host??

if memory serves you're in Eastern Canada so I don't know how well this might work for you. but I can tell you I'm very much pleased with these guys...did I say very very pleased. =) I know squat about any of this back end stuff other than ftp and whenever I've had problems they've walked me through it every time.
I don't think I've ever been put on hold and most usually the person who answers the phone is your support guy. It's the 'hours' of phone support that might not make it for you. The nice thing for me...it's a local phone call.... and there's an actual physical door I can knock on if I so desire.

Plenty. Make sure you have your own backups. Have the old plan run longer than the actual move.
Plan in downtime.
Yes I'm on the East Coast of Canada (almost) but I don't care if the provider is in the U.S.
Right now the provider I have, Webserve.ca, is on the West Coast.
I can't access any of my CMS - "you don't access to this server".
It's been 4 days now..if I phone I just get put on hold.
They answer my emails by saying

Over and over. They don't even bother to read my email, to understand I can't login. All they must do is navigate to the splash page and say...ok, it's up now. This is the worst service you can imagine. Total incompetence.
MySQL database is backed-up, so are the static elements (photos, html, flash, etc.).
Will do search and replace wherever I need to adjust things.
I feel like a battered spouse now...not looking forward to a new relationship to get beaten up again.
What about DNS servers? Will I need to do anything? Not that a delay will do any harm given it's just a personal site.
What about the big boyz like Yahoo or Dreamhost?
Would they have better quality servers and redundancy.
Right now I think i'm being hosted on a open box special from best buy.
I checked the Dreamhost site and what they offer from a quantity perspective is lightyears ahead of the crap I'm paying for. But what about quality?

Well ozoneasylum is hosted by Dreamhost ... decide for yourself ... I haven't noticed any problems. I'd go for dreamhost overall... (and I did) because you get an unbelievable package ... not just the bandwidth and disk space but also other features ... and these things in my eyes make up for the glitches and small problems dreamhost may have. Today I contacted support and I got a fix and an a nice honest answer in less than an hour. I'm very pleased with that.
edit: btw I marked my support request as level 2 importance of the 5 options (5. being the most critical)
TP: Are you happy with DreamHost.
I remember the server problems the Asylum had not too long ago.

I have looked at reviews of hosts in general on the net and I think that for each thumbs up most get 20 thumbs down.
I let Webserve.ca know that I will never deal with them again - finished.
Then I went in to Plesk to do one final backup and it returned a 0 byte sql file?
So I can't login to any MySQL based content and now I can't backup my site. My last backup was in Jan.
What's going on?

Interesting concept Dan..but overkill for me - not to mention I don't have a box.
My needs are very simple, one domain, about 5 GB of storage (I have 1 with my current plan) and about max 100GB of bandwidth (I hit about 25 at peaks right now, but lots of hosts are providing huge bw.)
I would love to host myself at home but that violate my ISP contract. If I could, I'd buy the box and learn tons in the process - would not have to worry about the site going down either as it is not a commercial one.
Just a note for you, SW: SliceHost don't get you to send them a box. They give you a virtual machine on one of their hosting platforms, and you set up the server yourself. The might install the base OS for you, but I don't know. I know the hosting concept, though, because my company does a little of it too.

How would you setup the server remotely. Through FTP? That would be so slow...

You get ssh access. You can remotely administrate the box any way you want to. Since it is a virtual host you can easily wipe it, install a new OS and start over.
It is a very cool concept. It might be overkill for many people, but when you get into more advanced and custom applications it is the only way to go other than hosting it yourself.
I moved over to them because it was too much of a headache dealing with power outages at my house which would require me to update all my DNS records for a new IP address.
