Ever since I started using Photoshop CS3 Extended I've started to experience problems with Photoshop becoming unresponsive for long periods of time and almost crashing every time I switch to the font tool.

I have somewhere in the region of 4000 fonts installed which is a lot, I know, but I haven't had these problems before...

I've heard over the years about various solutions which allow you to install fonts in alternative dirs (i.e. not Windows/fonts or common files/adobe/fonts). Maybe something like that would solve my problem?

Do you have any special software installed in order to better cope with huge amounts of fonts?

I don't care about Photoshop and other software being slow when it's starting up. But Photoshop's habit of almost crashing is hugely annoying. (I don't have the same problem in Flash, Illustrator or any other apps. Just Photoshop.)

Any tips welcome!

There are many utilities that will allow you to activate fonts for your current session (until the next boot) or permanently. Font Reserve and Suitcase are examples. I suppose there might be freeware too

Well first thing I would do is go to Preferances-->Type and turn off font preview. This is what is slowing down photoshop. And it mostly useless unless you set the previews to big, and then you have to scroll for hours.

If you need to preview fonts it's much better to find a small font viewing utility that can sit in your windows tool bar.

I use Printers Apprentice: www.loseyourmind.com - Like most windows font managers, it has it's issues. I dislike having to re-parse the font directory every time you open or change a group. But it works well, and it's better then native windows. Plus it's only $25 and supports truetype, postscript, and open type fonts and makes some nice font catalogs, and is very useful for font previewing. It looks like version 8 is slowly in the works too.

Holy crap, I didn't know you could turn off font preview! That is quite a useful piece of information. Thanks!
