1. I doubt they'l ever finish: they started in 1996 and havent managed to produce a beta?

2. The description on why they are doing it is also pre 2000 they talk about old consol based linuxes, without ..(what do you cal it?) windows emulation/integration software.

It's a nice idea to challenge M$ but a completele different thing to acctually do so

Well I checked out their SVN and the last update was 12 minutes ago, so I think there are people still working on it, also in the last Linux Format magazine they had an article on alternative OS's and ReactOs was spoken about in a most promising fashion.

Sure it's got a long way to go, but with Microsoft dropping support for XP eventually, it may become a more important project, the only thing they really need to be wary of is a hefty lawsuit from Microsoft.

Don't discount them that easily! I've worked with the some of the guys behind this on a couple of other things in the past, and they're very motivated I mean, don't forget, this is in a similar vein to the wine project, except even more ambitious. Wine is barely out of alpha, so it's hardly surprising that these guys haven't got to the beta stage yet! Nevertheless, I'm sure they will. Try it out; it's really incredibly advanced, and of course you can boot it from CD etc. And I don't think they need to be worried about microsoft. They had a fright a while ago, hence the audit, but they are very careful to do everything in a clean-room fashion.
I love watching this project progress I only wish I had the knowledge/ability to help them!

The leading PC magazines are giving these guys air time.
The last magazine I read was "Hate Vista. Here's how to downgrade back to XP"
This is very much alive.

When was Vista started? 5-6 years ago? and they managed to produce and sell a pre-alpha?

The big difference is that microsoft threw more money and bodies at Vista we can imagine and they still failed. Hey, about giving these guys a chance?

why would i want to?

what i actually want to say is: why would i want to coppy a so "inferior" OS? i mean there are enough good Linux versions out there .. i am actually going to the linux day in graz on saturday.

btw what does "air time" mean exactly?

Unfortunately, FF has not kicked IE's ass. IE is still the No. 1 Browser.

Yeah, but you know what I meant. Artists, developers, techies...all use FF.

obviously not. on the other hand building a solid new OS shouldn't be as great a challenge as it has become thanks to MS and their quest for backwards compatibility and useless features. what a shame that in 2008 with the powerful hardware, we have we still can't have a simple/ secure/ fast /reliable OS...instead of a bloated piece of crap.

and sorry but I need windows..to run the same apps as my office and to game...try running Crysis or Gears of War on some other platform.

Re-implementing proprietary technologies (legally) is a waste of time. Any time Microsoft wants (as they have in the past, often), they can change their protocols, formats, systems, etc. just to break 3rd party software. As long as they're willing to do this, no 3rd party reimplementation software will ever be able to keep up, or, most likely, last. Same applies to Adobe (Flash), Sun (Java), and on and on. Doing it on purpose isn't even a requirement ? they can just decide to do something different for sensible reasons or not, and since it's their technology, and their implementations are almost certainly the most prevalent, people will expect similar functionality.

Precisely. It'd be lovely if I could run all my fave' games (read: addictions) and applications (that generally coincide with what's required of my job) altogether on some other OS. As it is, I do most of my work at home with Vista, and almost all my gaming with XP. At least I can trim XP down to the bare bones for gaming, but after my brutal surgery, it has ended-up a bit fugly...

Was browsing through the PC rags at the bookstore.

Apparently this project is running again. Reviews were very positive.

God I hate microsoft.

I note that the ReactOS project is still in alpha. Hmmm.

Perhaps it will always be no more than a dream...
