just thought i'd share the link for those who are interested. looks like trent reznor is among the first artists who have realized how music is consumed these days. those who want to buy a real cd can still do so and get some printed bonus material etc. the rest, who would download the music anyway can now pick it up legally. this way of releasing music reminds me a bit of radiohead, but nin is pushing it a bit further though.

as a thank you to our fans for your continued support, we are giving away the new nine inch nails album one hundred percent free, exclusively via nin.com. the music is available in a variety of formats including high-quality MP3, FLAC or M4A lossless at CD quality and even higher-than-CD quality 24/96 WAVE

what are your thoughts about this sort of release? personally, I think Reznor is a damn smart guy. he released the first two singles through facebook and some other social networking sites, and today he put the announcement of the whole album on digg.com. this all ends up in some clever viral marketing, getting reznors music spread widely without much effort...

I can't say I see anything smart about it.
Other than that I'd consider myself entirely indifferent.

I won't take it for free any more than I would pay for it...

he released the first disc of this for free a while back and then had the full album as a $5 download. Had a box set something or another for $300. They made $1.7 million off of this. All money went to the band, not the record company, not the promoters...the band. It was a brilliant move IMO.

However, the question has to be asked. Could a no-name band do something similar and make money off of it? Probably not.

Now the album, I love. Not because it's NIN or Trent Reznor, but that it is well done and a step into a somewhat different realm for them. But then again, I like techno.

You have a point here, cprompt. Definitely not.

and yes, nin released the first 9 (of 36!) songs of an instrumental-only album called Ghosts for free and charged 5 bucks for the whole record. i'm not sure here, but as far as i remember they made these $1.7m in less than a week.
the same will happen soon with the slip, as they release it on cd and vinyl in july. pretty smart if you ask me
