Topic: PC Programs for Schools

I've been doing tech support for a school division for some time and thought I would share some fo the programs that I've found over the last couple years.

First off is Tux4Kids. A nice set of programs that is free and open source.
Tux Paint is a fun drawing/rubber stamp program.
Tux of Math Command is a math game with some tutorials. I think its good for k-9.
Tux Type is a fun typing game but not very good for actualy teaching typing.

Stellarium has been used for about a year now to help teach astronemy in one of my schools.

Subtangent has a number of flash games and other resources shared under a Creative Commons Non-commercial license.

Google Earth and Sketchup have been used in a number of classes. One techer has the students make models of their yards in Sketchup every year.

I had one teacher using iTunes and Audacity to get grade 5-6 kids doing podcasts that he shared off the school website with parents.
And his delicous bookmarks are a resource in and of themselves.

Speaking of astronomy software, this is supposed to be very good: Universe Sand Box.

My boys are getting bigger (now 20 months old) and we will, of course, be looking for things like this eventually.

Thank god I was still able to find old Sesame Street vids - my boys love those!
