I am designing a site, and while I can create a fairly good-looking shiny metal interface edging (the usual beveled pipe-like sort of thing), I was wondering if anyone had any tips for getting a photo-realistic platinum/silver look to this type of 3D interface? I have only used Photoshop, and have not used Bryce or Blender for 3D models... but would that be the path to try? It would be a typical half-cylinder style bevel look.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated, and thank you in advance.

A couple of basic tips - there are two main visuals that set silver apart from steel

1) softer surface, resulting in softer reflections and the appearance of softer edges

2) higher and more dominant highlights

keeping that in mind while applying your techniques should help adapt your style.
