I started playing Foos about 3 years ago (where I work bought a table for the workers, and we started playing on our breaks).

At first, I could barely do anything! It was embarassing, and a few of the "good" players enjoyed spanking us soundly.

Thus began my odyssey to get better.

Eventually, I found a table on E-Bay that I could afford, and bought it.

After that, my mad skillz increased, until I was the top dog at work. I soon gathered a small group of players, and we started practicing at my home together. It was lots of fun, but something was missing...

I was not getting better!

You see, it takes playing against better players, to really get one motivated and going in Foos. Once that stops, one stagnates fast. So what was the next logical step to take?

I looked around for a league to play in.

It took me two years to finally find a league that plays nearby. Pretty strange, the sport here in Germany seems to be some sort of underground cult, or something. In any regards, I joined as soon as I could (which was basically immediately, and I brought along some new recruits, which made the boys happy )

Tonight was my first Tournament.

Normally I was not scheduled to play (being that I joined up mid-season), but as our Team (KC Tenne Zetel) soundly beat the pants off of the opposing team, it was not really necessary for the last two sets to be played - so they let me substitute in!

We were playing doubles, with me in front (Striker) and Rudiger in back (Goalie). Best of 3 games wins the set.

In the first set, game 1, my game was on! I quickly took apart the 5er of my opponent and proceeded to destroy the opposing Goalie from my 3-bar with european front pin shots (we play on a Tornado table btw). Everyone was pretty stunned, I think, because doing the european front pin on a Tornado is hell (believe me, it is).

After the initial shock wore off (I believe we won that game 6-3), the second game started. We went up early to 3-2, but then my Goalie started showing signs of weariness (he had played most of the tournament, and it was extracting it's toll - tournament play is exhausting!). We lost a close game, 4-6.

The last game was just not meant to be. Our opponents paid off the good-luck fairy, and all they had to do was look at the ball, and it scored. Miserable. My shooting was ineffective, and we just ran out of gas. I think we lost 2-3 to 6

So it was time to summon up the reserves, steel the nerves, and get back into things. The second (and last) match started - again, I was in front, and Rudiger in back.

Things were different - with gritted teeth, I was determined that we would not lose! We crushed them in the first game (6 - 2), then they came roaring back in the 2nd game, after I had scored 3 goals without them scoring one. We fell behind, 3-4. I got down on the 5er, and dug out some saves on the 3 bar, and just like magic, my shot was back! We went up 5-4...

Then things got tough. We all hunkered down, sweat dripping from brows, into eyes, and there was no quarter asked, nor given. The ball went back and forth, both goalies pulling out incredible saves, and we strikers digging down deep into our chest of tricks and secrets.

It was like some sort of bizarre tennis match, back and forth, back and forth, the ball ripping though the ranks, but not finding a goal to disappear into.

Then I got the ball (one of those quirky things, I just happened to react at the right time, and with the right movement, and I just instinctively clamped the ball in place). One deep breath, then I moved the ball to the center, faked once left, then hammered it home to the right!

GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLLLL!

I am still pumped about it!

Looking forwards to the next game!

I wish I had pics - I forgot to bring the camera (but that is a good idea, next time, I bring it!).

Of course, when one plays, it is hard to take pics!

I used to play a lot of Table Football in my last company, but eventually I had to retire.

Firstly it just made me too damn sweaty, and that's no good when you've got to head back to your desk later

Secondly I got too bored by players that would just stop the ball and slow the game down when I wanted to keep the speed up, I literally got bored of playing against some people because they would prattle about so much, I had to stop myself form walking away.

I don't play anymore.

Part II

Well, our league just had the end final (where the year's end Trophy is handed out).

All I can say is :

HOLY F***ING CRUD

We drove down to Oldenburg together (being that is where the Tournament was held) and arrived around 4:30 in the afternoon.

My Team had two matches to play - 1 vs KC Contact Oldenburg and a delayed match vs KC Einstein Emden.

In total, there were 10 Teams present (those that make up the Nord-West Liga, in english the Northwest League).

Website : www.allesauf.de

My Team is KC Zetel Tenne. I am not in the team list yet - that will occur in October (start of the new season).

We placed 6th from 10, unfortunately, due to a number of no-shows (that will be different this coming season, believe me!).

We did pretty well, all things considered. It was kind of hard for me to keep track of things, because I was playing!

I played in 5 matches, in total : 4 Doubles and 1 Singles match.

I played with Rudiger together (you can see his pic under the listing of KC Zetel Tenne). Me up front in Striker postion, and him in back in Goalie position.

We did fairly well - together we won 2 (both on our table, Tornado) and lost 2 (on their table, Lehmacher). Thankfully, we shot more goals on their table as they shot against us on ours, so that was positive. In my singles game, I literally crushed my opponent 6-2. He couldn't believe it

An incredible experience in and by itself - but there were more juicy highlights in store for me!

An ex-World Champion also plays in our league (I had heard this, but I have never seen him play) - and he is damn good! Watching him play was just incredible.

I got to play against and together with a German National Player - Mohssen Assanimoghaddam under KC Olympic Oldenburg I (he had also played against with Billy Pappas of America and won, if anyone here knows anything about Foos, he is the best American Player alongside with Tony Spredeman). Incredibly enough, I was able to hold my own mostly against him - though in some areas, his ability was just amazing!

Actually was able to beat him a few times!

We played for hours - it was just a lot of fun! Lots of tips and experience won here.

Althogether, I was on my feet and playing for 10 hours - we played until 02:30 the next morning!

Great stuff!

Looking forwards to next season!

Hopefully, there will be some pics this time (the press was present, and the league took pics and vids of the games, so if I get lucky, I will be in some of them!).

Foos rocks

We have a table at work for games during lunch or after work. Major way to kill time though, so I have to be careful Most of the people we play with here (6-8 people regularly) are decent, but I imagine we'd all get our socks knocked off if we played anyone that played for real. Like you said, you have to keep playing people that are better than you for you to improve, and we've all kinda started stagnating (though I'm still on the low end of the skills because I got a late start, so I'm still picking up tricks and improving a bit here and there). If I got a table for at home, my wife would kill me

Awesome story though WS
