umm, actually you don't need the lunar part.

code:
Lunacy, term meaning mental illness, stemming from the prefix Luna. A term leftover from ancient times when the moon was thought to cause insanity and mental problems.

The worst thing is, Tao, that even being aware of the etymology of the word, I was still looking for some sign of lunacy expressed in the page that was linked!

I think I might need to change my brain's clutch plates, coz' they're slipping...

Just think of it as foreshadowing.

The lunacy will come into play when countries start to stake their claim as to who owns the moon water.

Then it will hit full stride with endorsements and distribution rights.

Miller and Budweiser will make beer from it, Gatorade will make sports drinks...etc.

On the other hand..this is very exciting science!

I'm not sure how the discovery of water will change things, but I can say that on a previous research bender, I did rather a lot of reading on the matter of 'moon rights'...

First, despite the countless entities 'selling' rights or names to/for extraterrestrial real estate, none of these claims are legally recognised by any organisation or authority on Earth. In other words, nothing off Earth is owned by anybody on Earth, and no claims can be made, legally, to anything that isn't considered terrestrial.

Any claims to ownership of any part of the moon are worth less than the medium upon which they are recorded, regardless of whether they were staked by an individual, an organisation, or a governmental body.

The 1967 Outer Space Treaty forbids any nation (or 'natural person') from claiming ownership of the moon (or any other celestial body)

In 1979, a further 'U.N. Moon Agreement' appears to close the door on claims of a private, commercial, or national nature.

That doesn't stop people like Dennis Hope from declaring (erroneously, or deliberately in ignorance) that, as an individual, a loophole exists that allows him to claim sole ownership of the moon, but as he wasn't the first to make such claims, any success on his part to prove a loophole would logically deny him the right to exploit it. This hasn't stopped him from selling lunar real estate to hundreds of thousands of purchasers. He continues to do business based on various assumptions and seemingly deliberate falsehoods.

Incidentally, Hope also claims to own every other extraterrestrial body in our little system. He has admitted at one time or another that the endeavour began as a bit of joke. This has no real bearing on the fact that he has made quite a lot of money out of it... along with a large number of people who cottoned-on early, and sold their large initial purchases from him as ever-smaller lots, prompting him to follow suit. It seems that Hope operates on the principal that his claims are legal and proper simply because no government has actually told him otherwise.

Ultimately, his claims and deeds (along with any issued or declared by any other entity) are merely novelties. Hope is far from being alone.

The work of one other such entity has managed to yield some slightly more interesting results, such as (probably) the most comprehensive publicly available atlas of the moon by The Lunar Republic Society, who have at one time managed to removed the name of an accused Nazi war criminal from a crater upon the moon. Generally, however, every attempt to legally define ownership of extraterrestrial space or bodies has ended in farce, .

Sadly, this means that various claims or deeds are likely duplicated by other persons under other organisations, and not a single one of them has any legal value under any constitution on Earth, regardless of how much was paid to secure them. This counts for the naming of stars too... o.0

It is safe to assume that until landings have been made and land occupied, no claims can legally be made or recognised. Even then, nothing is certain...
_____

Originally, I spent a couple of days reading piles and piles of info. on lunar mining rights in order to give a sensible answer to a daft question regarding the legality and possible long-term effect of mining large quantities of material from the moon. I've refreshed some details along the way.

Yes. I waste hours of my time on stuff like this, but I'm not ashamed. :P Hehe!

History tell us that "claims of ownership" are supported by brute force, not legal documents.

Didn't keep Hitler from invading Poland.
Or the U.S. doing the same to Iraq.
Just to name two incidents out of a hundred thousand or so.
