I thought I'd share this. A few weeks ago I re-imaged the XP partition on my dual boot system.
When I booted my Vista OS was no longer recognized. Not unexpected and not really a problem.
Even though I don't really use Vista, I thought I should restore it's MBR. I used BCDedit as I have before but this time something went very wrong.
BCDedit reported errors. When I rebooted, I had my 500GB external on and when I returned to my computer chkdsk was running on it.
I never allow chkdsk to run - it is the most dangerous piece of crap Microsoft or anyone else has written.
After what seemed like hours, my system finally rebooted and when I tried to access my external drive, this is what I got.
code:
The file or directory is corrupt and non-readable/
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/176646
I ran Seagate diagnostics which told me the drive was fine. Trying to read the drive was not possible in XP. When I restored Vista, I could see the files but as soon as I tried to access a file it would be a BSOD.
I googled and the recommend solutions ran from : "You are totally screwed", "Kiss your data goodbye", to "Reformat".
I tried TestDisk and it basically said ballgame over. I tried a freeware called PC Inspector and finally I was able to see and recover folders. Problem was half the folders recovered, once copied back to my HDD were empty!
Most of my files (90%) were backed up to another 1TB external disk, but being lazy these days I had failed to backup the newest additions (mostly photos).
Finally I found a software called Data Recovery Wizard Professional. To make a long story short, I recovered (AFAIK) every single file that I lost.
So if your FAT or MBR or whatever gets corrupted but your drive is still sound, don't despair, you can retrieve your files.
And never never allow CHKDSK to run on your PC.
Oh, and once I had recovered all my files, I did reformat the corrupt drive and ran full diagnostics. It is working fine and of course I'm copying a second copy just in case it or the other drive fail.
