Whats with the monitoring of Google results?

I have been keeping an eye on the FAQ's search engine requests--specifically its Google rankings--as the FAQ (amongst many other things) is a perfect test bed for ideas about what search engines like in pages that they give a high ranking. I'll post my conclusions here when I have drawn the threads of my thoughts together.

I should say, though, that all the search engine terms are genuine and have been fished from the server stats here.
