There are numersou different solutions although they will depend on the country and services:
ICQ
You can send text messages from ICQ.

You can also use server-sdie scripting to send them from your site (a good way to send alerts to yourself when you are out and about):
PHP
SmsWebSender
PhpSmsSend - scroll down towards the bottom of the page.
PHPmyPagers - allows you to send a message to your mobile phone, ICQ or other pager services.
MySMS
PhpSmsSend - also allows you to send logos and ringtones (its not clear if this is free but the scripts are freely available).
