There are a number of reserved IPs for various reasons (note: * is used as the wildcard in the IP address and stand fo any number between 0 and 255):

There are one set of reserved addresses for 'private' networks for each IP address class:
Class A: 10.*.*.*
Class B: 172.16.*.* - 172.31.*.*
Class C: 192.168.*.*

The loopback/localhost address:
127.0.0.1 - although the whole rnage is reserved: 127.*.*.*

The zero addresses can also not be used:
0.*.*.*

Microsoft APIPA (Automatic Private Internet Protocol Addressing) also reserves a set of IPs:
169.254.*.*
