Well I'm suprised no one has started a thread on this yet so here goes - anyone got anything from a mystery admirer or have any big plans for their better half?

The life of the Emperor is an ascetic monk-like one so no cards (sent or received for me) - I'd just like to say:

I love you guys/gals

Ooh, time for one last post before bed.

Valentine's Day was pretty cool--I just got in from a "double date" with myself, my wife, my sister-in-law and her husband. We went out to dinner and then headed out to Buck Mulligan's for a few pints of Guinness. Now that's what I call a nice Valentine's Day.

Side note: believe it or not, but in Korean there is a kinship term for "younger sister-in-law's husband." There's even a kinship term for "sibling of younger sister-in-law's husband." It gets so bad that most Koreans have to think twice about what to call certain relations sometimes).

Side note #2: believe it or not, but I recently got an e-mail from an American who started a consulting firm here in Seoul, asking me where exactly Buck Mulligan's was located. He had heard about it but never found out exactly where it was, so he Googled it and came up with a thread I posted here on the subject once. I just love Google.

Money's tight for us, so it'll be simple stuff. I'll whip up a nice warm bubble bath, have a few armoatherapy candles lit in the bathroom, set up a cd of Enya or Loreena McKennitt and turn off the lights. Next, I'll cook up a couple of steaks with mushroom caps, crushed garlic, and a mix of spices, while I steam a mix string beans, corn, and cauliflower, and plunk in some long grain rice into the rice cooker with some soy sauce and peanut sauce for flavoring.

Oh, and most important of all... The kids will be ensconced in their room for the night with popcorn and several rented movies.

Simple stuff, but I think it'll work.

I'll be spending the evening with a dark, curvaceous little creature. Several, in fact. And if I take my time and suck on them just right, I expect they'll all go down easy.

Hmm...I guess I should make more room for them in the fridge when I get home.

Taking the kids to a school Valentine's dance. We are then collapsing for the night after a very long, hard week. Maybe Sat will be a bit more romantic. No, wait, have to take my son to his basketball game. Dang. OK, maybe Sunday then. No, wait, daughter has a Girl Scout function. Hmmmmmm

Got my better half flowers and one of those monster-sized helium balloons. Other than that, though, we belong to the kids.

Gotta love parenthood ...

A little story for Valentine's Day:

A mild-mannered man was tired of being bossed around by his wife. He went to a psychiatrist to discuss the problem. The psychiatrist said he needed to build his self-esteem and gave him a book on assertiveness. After finishing the book, the man went home, stormed into the house and walked up to his wife. Pointing a finger
in her face, he said, "From now on, I want you to know that *I* am the man of this house, and my word is law!
I want you to prepare me a gourmet meal tonight, and when I'm finished eating my dinner, expect a sumptuous dessert. Then, after dinner, you're going to draw me my bath so I can relax. And when I'm finished with my bath, guess who's going to dress me and comb my hair?" "The funeral director," his wife answered.

=)

I'm on cloud 9. My latest interest lives 2 hours away... We couldn't be together because he had to work tonight, I had stuff to do tomorrow, and he's gonna be busy Sunday... He had one of my friends ask to come over for help with a programming assignment (it was funny, he asked if I could help him with a C++ program, I said I only knew C and Java, he said "Oh, I lied, it's in Java"... I'm gullible, I believed it). He shows up at my door with roses, a teddybear, and chocolate, and said "It's from Mike." I nearly fainted, lol. I didn't know whether to hug my friend or run for my phone to call Mike... Then Matt handed me his cellphone with Mike waiting for me ) It was so sweet! I cried, lol.

I have a date tomorrow night with somebody else... That's prolly not good, is it? LOL

Exactly how do we love you, Dan? Well, let's just leave that to the imagination shall we?

I've got to share this. A few years back I told everyone how little Wella and I go in for mushy sorts of special day activities. Well, this year, she asked me just how important Valentine's day was to me and I thought about it for a second. I was eating a delicious plate of Mexican food with very hot green chile sauce, so I reckoned I was looking forward to the next morning's "passing of the chile" at least an order of magnitude more than I was looking forward to Valentine's Day to which she laughed and whole-heartedly agreed. We love each other too much everyday of the year to worry about one soppy day here and there

But that's just the way we do it, YMMV

I don't know... this is the second really good Valentine's Day I've been around for. The first one was in college, the only time I've had Valentine's Day and a girlfriend concurrently; this time, my best friend proposed to his girlfriend on the stage of the play we'd just attended, in front of the whole audience (we'd gotten the assistance of the company, especially easy since they were doing a Valentine's-themed show) -- and she accepted. Brought a tear to my eye.

I hate it because it's a waste of time. If you really love someone, you shouldn't need a particular day to express that love. It's just a big, silly money-making thing now.

No, you don't. But holidays mark special occasions to put aside everything else for a time and celebrate together. Your friends shouldn't need birthdays for you to remind them how much you care about them. We shouldn't need Thanksgiving to come together as families. We shouldn't need New Year's Day to celebrate life.

Marking dates to do these things, however, helps to bring feelings to the forefront, to make others feel extra special, to create memories that we can carry through our lives.

Holidays are important. It's vital to celebrate our lives and relationships and to make special time above the normal expressions of love. Otherwise, each day becomes like every other and we tend to take our emotions and relationships for granted.

As for Valentine's Day, or any other holiday for that matter, saying it's nothing more than a "big, silly money-making thing," well, that's up to you. Not the Wal-Marts or the greeting-card companies. How we celebrate the holidays ? that's what make the holidays what they are.

Not celebrating a holiday because you think every day should be special...well, every day isn't. Life gets in the way. We all know that. Using such an excuse to ignore holidays is silly.

St Valentine - who was he?

Legend has it...

Emperor Claudius had outlawed marriage in the military, on the grounds that married men made poor soldiers (loyalties elsewhere and all that).

Bishop Valentine was a romantic sort who secretly married soldiers and their lovers.

Upon learning of this deception, Emperor Claudius had Valentine gaoled, pending execution.
Whilst in the gaol, he became enamoured by the gaoler's daughter.

Prior to his execution, his parting note to her was signed "From Your Valentine".

February 14 was designated St Valentine's Day In AD496 by Pope Gelasius.
Valentine was canonised on the grounds that he was executed for refusing to denounce his Christianity.

Well, that's legend for you...

So to all you cynics out there, it's not a ploy by Hallmark - they merely cash in on a 1507 year old tradition.
