Arighty then, Monday was back-to-school-day for me and already I'm finding myself in a position to drop survey question in here.

Oh and before you ask, this is not my homework, it's *cough* research *cough* for a project I'll be developing over the next five months.

Q series 1: For the casual web surfer:
1a: Do you have Macromedia's Director Plug-in installed? -- If the answer is no then simply ignore the rest of the questions)
1b: What was the reason behind installing the plug-in? --Try to be kinda specific i.e.: To play a game, to view extra promotional material about a movie, just wanted to see what all this director stuff was, for it's 3D capabilities etc etc...
1c: If you encounter a website with Director content are you more likely to stick around to see it or not bother due to loading times?
1d: Have you ever gone to a specific website just to view it's director content?

Q Series 2: For anyone who has developed in Director before:
Please rate the following questions from 1 to 10, add additional comments if you wish...
2a: Director as an overall multimedia development environment?
2b: As a web delivered multimedia environment?
2c: As a game development environment?
2d: As a web based game development environment?

Q3: In terms of web based game development, what would you consider Directors Con's and Pro's compared to other available web technologies?

Q4: What kind of games do you think director would be best suited for? Non real-time interactivity? Action games? Puzzle games? RPG games?
-- Please ignore directors networking capabilities in this regard, I don't have the resources to fully utilise them so their out by default.

I realise that's a lot of questions but you'd be doing me a great service just to answer a few of them. Oh and just in case anyone want's to know what this is all for, well, either re-read the last 2 questions or ask me again in 5 months .

Many many thanks in advance.

Dracusis: OK - it looks like you are working on something interesting and so I'm happy to do anything I can to help

Q series 1: For the casual web surfer:
1a: Do you have Macromedia's Director Plug-in installed?

Yes although it isn't the latest version.

1b: What was the reason behind installing the plug-in?

It was to look at someone's work - possibly InI's.

1c: If you encounter a website with Director content are you more likely to stick around to see it or not bother due to loading times?

I'd turn around and leave - it would be nagging me to get the latest plugin and the files tend to be larger than Flash files so I'd save myself the time and mve on.

1d: Have you ever gone to a specific website just to view it's director content?

Only when asked to by someone else.

Hope that helps. And we want to see what you are working on as soon as it is ready!!

This probably isn't especially helpful

1a No

2a - 10
Let me qualify this. I've only ever used Director for multimedia (promotional CD-ROMs). I did have a multimedia episode with C++ but that was a nightmare and immediately after that, we purchased Director 7. It was amazing, far easier. This was a few years back though and I haven't done much with it since then. From what I can remember, it was quite a versatile program and lingo seemed fairly easy to write. Director is the first program I'd got to if I were ever to do more CDs.

Q series 1: For the casual web surfer:
1a: Do you have Macromedia's Director Plug-in installed? -- If the answer is no then simply ignore the rest of the questions)

a.1a: Yes

1b: What was the reason behind installing the plug-in? --Try to be kinda specific i.e.: To play a game, to view extra promotional material about a movie, just wanted to see what all this director stuff was, for it's 3D capabilities etc etc...

a.1b: Two reasons, to check out directors 3d capabilities, and to play online games.

1c: If you encounter a website with Director content are you more likely to stick around to see it or not bother due to loading times?
1d: Have you ever gone to a specific website just to view it's director content?

a. 1c: Yes I would stick around, I am on DSL so the connection is not slow enough for most content. But in most cases I am not a casual browser. If I clicked on the site I generally intended to view the content. The wait is in material.

a.1.d: I have, I can't recall a specfic site but most likely a game site, or interactive cartoon site with games. I recall playing Spy Hunter and some old Atari titles on some site.

Sorry I don't know enough about director to answer the next questions.

Okey.....

1a: Do you have Macromedia's Director Plug-in installed? - YES!

1b: What was the reason behind installing the plug-in? - cos most of the sites I view day to day are more creative companies, portfolios, ect that some times need Director Plug-in installed for the full experience of there web site.

1c: If you encounter a website with Director content are you more likely to stick around to see it or not bother due to loading times? - Nether, cos it all depends on the sites content I want to get too and my connection speed.

1d: Have you ever gone to a specific website just to view it's director content? - Yes

Please rate the following questions from 1 to 10, add additional comments if you wish...
2a: Director as an overall multimedia development environment? - Yes
2b: As a web delivered multimedia environment? - Yes
2c: As a game development environment? - Yes
2d: As a web based game development environment? - Yes

Q3: In terms of web based game development, what would you consider Directors Con's and Pro's compared to other available web technologies? ? I think Director is good with all the 3D stuff and things, but still it's slow and bulky compared to flash in web work. And since flash is the 'get now' plug in, director is left behind for web work. But it has well more potential for web and other things, which are rarely known. I attended a macromedia show last year and the stuff they showed that you can do with director, I've never seen on the web or any where else. I think if people gave director an chance with the web, it can be great. But as with all plugin's from macromedia there resource hogs, which is dad thing,

Q4: What kind of games do you think director would be best suited for? Non real-time interactivity? Action games? Puzzle games? RPG games? ? Any that the programmer can create. But for now I think simple games like RPG, Puzzle games and arcade classics re-makes.

1a. Yes
1b. To play a game
1c. stick around
1d. no

2a. 10
2b. 8
2c. 7 (but I've never developed a game personally)
2d. 9

Q3. I'm not aware of the other web-based game technologies sadly (other then flash and IMO it kicks flash's ass)
Q4. Gee, I'm not a game developer or player for that matter, but seems it'd be particularly good for puzzle games.
