Hi, all. how are you?
I am trying to find books for my web study.
Has anybody got these books?
JavaScript and DHTML cookbook (Oreilly)
PHP cookbook(Oreilly)
XML in a nutshell (Oreilly)

If you have them, do you think they are good for beginner who wants to study from basic to advanced staff?
Any advices will be highly happily appreciated.
They are very expensive though.

Cheers

Today I had a quick look to HTML and JavaScript book of Oreilly.
Probably I am going to buy above.
Well, it will cost me fortune though.

I have several of the O'Reilly books and think they are fantastic tools. But I don't think that any of them could really be considered as beginning texts. They might be the ticket for someone with a fair amount of experience in one language to pick up a new one. Or maybe if you just have a natural gift for programming.

I have had to go the route of having my hand held with Visual Quickstart type books, then I'll pick up the O'Reilly book ,and maybe a Wrox book too, if there is enough cash left on the money tree.

The O'reilly books are great but maybe not for starters and very expensive, if you really want to learn get them.
For the dhtml and javascript there is an alternative for starters: Designing with JavaScript But it's not a replacement when you need in depth info.

Thanks for your words, guys.
I really appreciated that.
Today I got Oreilly's Javascript book from my tutor. I had a quick look. It was pretty deep and complicated.
So I'm thinking now......
Anyway, thanks for your help.
See ya.

hiroki, I understand you're enrolled in some kind of course to learn 'webdesign', or something similar, right?
Doesn't your institution have a library where you can borrow the books from?
Or is there a public library or university library close to where you live? I saved serveral fortunes by making good use of my universitys library alread, and have only been living close to one for 9 months ;-)

Umm, I've never used the cookbook series myself but I believe the 'In A Nutshell' is basically just a handbook. It won't be useful at all for a beginner. I'm under the impression that the cookbook series (in various languages) contains a series of scripts you can create yourself and they explain it to you. That could be useful for what you want.

While its not a beginners book, I'd suggest JavaScript: The Definitive Guide. If you have questions you can always ask them here.

Hi, mates. Thanks for your words. How are you today?
I have just got school.
Well, yes. I have a student library here. But there are hardly any interesting books. It is really pity. I haven't tried public library yet. But I assume it wouldn't provide me those kind of books. I am living in very country side so that really hard to find good books.
Anyway, I will talk to my tutor then decide what is the best.
Again, thanks for your helps. I really appreciated that.
Cya.

I learned JavaScript from O'Reilly's JavaScript: The Definitive Guide. However, I had had some experience with Visual Basic before that, and I think that helped significantly. I'm not sure if a beginner to programming could easily learn JavaScript from that book.

I tried to learn at least a couple of different languages before I successfully learned JavaScript. Programming is like that; you need to screw up a lot before you start understanding what's really going on.

Hi, Slime. How are you?
Thanks for your reply.
Well, I have done QBASIC for half year. It was my first programming experience.
I am not sure if I can learn JavaScript from those book.
I just wanted to have a couple of good books to use them for ages.
Again, thanks a lot.

I've got the PHP Cookbook, the PHP Developers Dictionary, and the Sam's PHP web dev book (the big purple and white one). They're all great books - the two o'reilly books especially for reference, but my fave is the Sam's book. i learned PHP with it and still use it all the time.

for a beginner go with the Sam's book
