Scientists say they have finished writing the "book of life", the three billion letters of DNA that make up the human genome.

Read about it: http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_770424.html http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99993621 http://www.busrep.co.za/index.php?fSectionId=272&fArticleId=131453

Also: UCSC Genome Bioinformatics Home, where you can download the >3 billion character sequence (among other things).

Everywhere I've seen, this story has been relatively buried under articles about the war. Don't get me wrong, I like that we are kept informed on events in the Middle East (as long as it's within reason), but I feel events such as this should be allowed their time in the spotlight as well. Afterall, this is a major accomplishment, is it not? Or am I just crazy?

At first, i thought this was a topic about gnomes. I love gnomes. I have some sort of weird gnome fetish.

yeah... gnomes are cool.

Quick JRR Tolkien trivia: In what book did Tolkien publish a crude copy of a GNOMISH poem/lyric?

Unfortunately, it's not quite over yet...there are still areas that haven't been sequenced...due to the lack of technology to sequence them. Everything that is sequencable, has been, however...a milestone of human achievement, to be sure.

Wonder what's 'hiding' in those non-sequencable bits?

WS: my guess is.... gnomes are. They're very sneaky, and very tiny. Its a possibility.
