On my PC at work, I'm restricted to this plain text email program called Simeon. (dunno if anyone's familiar with it, it's pretty danged basic - only a state institution would use software like this in every department... ) Anyway, here's the problem:
In order to view attachments, you have to go into the program options, and edit what are called "Helper Applications" (restating the obvious, these are the programs you wish to use when viewing specific types of files). XP has this nifty little program called the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. I want to use this to open image files on Simeon. However, I cannot find the .exe file anywhere on my hard drive, so that I would be able to link the path in Simeon.
Does anyone have any idea what the path to this little application might possibly be? I've looked everywhere, and I'm stumped.
(before the question arises, I had win98 before, and was using the little Kodak Imaging software that comes with it... Can't find that on XP either...)
As always, your assistance is much appreciated.

Have you tried to search for the file? Just curious...there is a file search function, I often use it, when I can't find a file. Also, you may need to set the 'show all files' thingy to see the .exe file...

Hope that helps...

hmmm....sounds like they just didn't install the kodak program....

and i would assume that it would be the in the system32 folder (c:/windows/system32)
hope that helps

It's actually hidden behind dll (gotta love microsoft!!), C:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll. Going to a command prompt and typing the following will bring up Window's pic&fax viewer.

rundll32 shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen

I'm still looking for a solution to this though; I'll let you know if I find one.

bodhi, just right-click on the shortcut you use to open the program, click on 'Properties' and that should give you the path and filename..

I did search for the program, but could not figure out what the actual file name was. I'll check on that shimgvw.dll file, Raptor...

The search function is very handy, but doesn't help much if you don't know the exact name of the file you're searching for. I thought I was looking for an .exe file, so doing *.exe might not have helped much, considering the possibility of an oddly named .dll file...
The Kodak viewer, in Win98, is part of the Windows folder files, (not exactly in the system32 folder, but close enough). I did scour all the Windows folders on my drive.
Part of my problem in finding it is that I don't have a shortcut to click on. When I click on an image in any other folder, it's the default viewer. I did look for a path in the properties, and it was telling me something about Documents and Settings>User>Start Menu>Accessories>Windows Picture and Fax Viewer; but didn't give me a file name, or a real path to it. Couldn't find the file going by that path. But I'll go back now and look for this .dll file. Perhaps that will do the trick. I'll let you know!
Thanks for the tips!

Alright - now this is starting to seem stupid - and perhaps it doesn't matter anyway, I could just use my browser as the picture viewer, but it's the principle of the thing. You know how that goes...

The Simeon "helper application" profile wants .exe files, not .dll files. Anyone been able to find out if there's a matching .exe for shimgvw.dll yet?

look, open up explorer and go to "Tools> Folder Options". Once there, click on the "File Types" Tab. There, scroll down to the filetype you're interested in- since you want images, let's try "JPG". Now, say it says "Opens with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer", click on the "Advanced" button. Editing the 'open' action, you'll see that the 'Application used to perform this action:' is rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1

Shooting that off in the 'Run' Dialoge, I see it works. Remember to replace the "%1" with the file you want to view, or simply nothing at all.

That being said, I suggest you get ACDSee instead.

If you know part of the ile-name you're searching for, the search function can work like you were back using DOS wildcards. Say I was searching for a file who's real name was docozoneisthebest but I only knew there'd be the word ozone in there somewhere I could search for a file called *ozone*.* which finds files of any type which have ozone somewhere in them.

true, but nothing in "shimgvw.dll" matches anything conceivable stemming from "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer"

All of that is true. It's not that I'm having a problem running the picture viewer, it works just fine.

The difficulty is in instructing the Simeon email client to choose that application when opening an image file.

If I had the ability here at work, I'd do some screen shots to show you what I mean. But let's see if I can clear up the confusion:

Simeon wants me to designate what applications I want it to use in order to open specific file types. Like winword.exe for .doc files, excel.exe for .xls files, and wmplayer.exe for .wav files and the like. For .bmp, .gif, and .jpg, I'd like the program to use the picture viewer, since it's so nice in XP. Alas, it appears to be only connected to a .dll file, Simeon won't link to it, since it's not an .exe file.
Thanks for all your suggestions. I guess I'll have to make it use Internet Explorer to view images. Pain in the ass. It'll be ok. I'm hoping that by the end of next week, I'll have a new PC here in the office, and I'll be able to set my MS Outlook up again. I had to get rid of the setup when I had this machine rebuilt, so I've been trying to deal with the cheap email clients in use on campus... I've just been biding my time until client services sees fit to come install the new machine. *sigh*

...that's because .dlls aren't executable, you need to use "rundll32.exe" to run them..

try this line- "rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen"

I did know that .dll files aren't executable...

But besides that point, Petskull, that sounds promising. I tried it in a couple of different formats, and it didn't seem to be able to locate it.
The program is asking for a path to an application, so if I type in this:

" C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe"

what notation would I have to use in order to direct the rundll32 to the shimgvw.dll file? Because it can't find the file or it's components when I plug in the syntax the way you suggested.

At this point, I'm actually really curious to see if/how this could work. Mostly on the general principle that it's something new. Thanks for humoring me, Petskull! I think I'm gonna make some screenshots and send them to my home PC. Then I'll be able to post it up this weekend so you can see what I'm dealing with! It might make it easier to diagnose...
