Windows Palladium ?

Click

Linux users will laugh... But is that our next Windows ? Personally, I think this is new way to assure a control on computers. Your thoughts ?

Edit : and furthermore, that sounds like an after-shave balm or a perfume...

Sounds great to me.

A version of windows which is stable, fast, with an SQL back end and thin-client GUI.
Superb.

So what if you can't create copies of copyright protected files. What right do you have to do that anyway?
After all (and it's been an oft bridged debate in the Asylum) someone OWNS the copyright... it's thiers, end of story.

How would you feel if a film or song you had spent a small fortune getting produced, was freely available online, and everyone was watching/listening to it, but you didn't even make enough cash back to cover the production costs?

I'd be pretty pissed off, I can tell you.

As for files which can delete themselves if viewed by someone without the propper rights... fantastic!
Think of haw many companies will love the idea of not etting ripped of by their employees emailing ideas home!

Anyways... nuff said.

Yea, right. The people who have enough money to spend lots of money producing something always make back their money, + a huge profit, despite free trade on the internet. I have never heard of what you are refering to actually happening. It just sounds like an excuse some big record producer came up with to increase his profits, so he could buy more suits.

So if I'm reading this right (no I didn't read it all yet)... I can't rip my music onto my computer? Because, technically that leads to theft according to some people. Assuming I have no P2P networking installed... Can I then?

I understand the want to remove piracy... I'm fine with that. But to limit the usability of my computer to my ability to connect to the net seems ridiculous. What happens when their servers go down and I can't get the recertification for my programs?

Moon Shadow - It sounds like a roleplaying system to me...

This is horrible. With a SQL base, and removing the existing file structure, Microsoft will (intentionally) make nothing run-able. I mean, what if I want to load up an old System Shock 2, or Baldurs Gate, or even graphics program like Microangelo, Milkshape 3d, private programs, small internet apps that you've used for years and were originally made for NT4. Are those going to be compatable. No. Only "certified programs." Will I be able to run Java Virtual Machine. I'm guessing not. How about OpenOffice? StarOffice?

And no mp3/divx files?! About 1/3 of my "collection" are legitimate MP3 files. They are removing my ability to use my legitimate files. And DivX. When I make movies, which I do maybe 2 to 3 times a year, I compress to DivX. Right now I'm in the process of converting tons of movies from the 60's from 8mm and even more Super-8 tapes to the computer, and I compress all of those to DivX. I leave the Mpeg2 of course, but for viewing I use DivX. Many movies use DivX.

This is insane. For these two reseans, I'm guessing that most people that use a computer regularly (pseudo-nerds to computer gurus) will be avoiding Palladium for years. At least, that is, untill someone get a good Win2k emulator and a new audio and video codec. Or hacks come out to break security protection.

Our nice little goverment at work again. Restricting our rights, but this time through the Monopoly-Man himself.

I'm sticking with 2k and (if I ever fucking get around to getting it) FreeBSD.

And whats this, the Fritz chip has to be installed in all new mobo's. Under penalty of (some) law. Damn. So stock up now people. And, it'll be a 500 fine and up to 5 years in prison to write software that will disable the copyright stuff, and selling a non-Fritz mobo is illegal as well.

And anyways they threaten you not being able to use photoshop (insert future version number here) but theres no way adobes gonna make a microsoft-exclusive photoshop. So just switch to mac, If they mke this it could be the downfall of windows.

I think I'm gunna switch to Linux when this happens, and run 2000 as a side-system. IMHO, Linux will become the standard in a few years, replacing Windows. Microsoft just signed it's own death warrant.

It's kinda scary really. Think about 1984. Microsoft has just taken the first step towards creating an Orwellian society.

An interesting and better written rundown of what Palladium, Fritz and TCPA (TCG) is, can be found here:
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/tcpa-faq.html

But it's a prime example of why you shouldn't centre whole paragraphs in 18point bolded times. You might need an asprin by the time you've finished, I recommend cut-n-past-n the text into your word processor so you can reformat it.

I read about this some time ago, and it doesn't sound any better this time...

They are trying to restrict and control what I do at my computer, far beyond merly upholding copyright laws. This new system will stop me from using illegal software, but it will also stop me from using a lot of legal software.

Think about all the small freeware and shareware prorams that you use every day? I doubt these will have the resources to get one of those license thingies so you cannot use them, even though they are legal. Microsoft will probably delay licensing comptetive software(like StarOffice and OpenOffice) for as long as well...

I'm definatly sticking to Linux

No Photoshop for Linux(gimp is as close as it gets), but Photoshop runs very well on my Mac. Limewire takes care of my fileshareing, and as far as MP3s go- iTunes is one of the most incredible pieces of software I've encountered. I don't know if I could code without iTunes and I hope I never have to find out (must... have....tunes..). Emulation? I run two flavors of Linux and W2000 using Virtual PC.

Yes, this is another shameless plug for Mac and OS-X.

Thanks for the info. You know what. I'm guessing that in time, or before the release of Palladium, someones going to make a Linux modification that runs Windows stuff. Because, imo, this is going to be the last OS that Microsoft puts out. My Dad agrees, as does pretty much the whole company that he works for. (A bunch of comp nerds).

i'm guessing that either (a) a Windows based OS will be released or (b) people will start writing stuff for Linux. I've never really gotten into Macs. I've used them, but I haven't fallen for them. (No multitasking is the biggerst issue, the fluff is the second)

I can't imagine that Gates would allow such a fatal decision to be made. Not unless he intends to cater exclusively to government and businesses. They must be able to see how much this is going to hurt their customer base.

I don't see this kind of operating system taking over, unless it's forcefully shoved down our throats.

They've got licenses with lots of hardware and software companies, what if your favourite piece of software will only run on this piece of [insert]? What if your latest motherboard / graphics accelerator refuses to work with anything else?

(insert: then you should've checked it before you bought it. Meh.)

But as soon as basic services (think internet access) will only work under Pal, then we're screwed.

Let's look at your analogy in fiscal terms...

Assume I've just stolen £1,000,000 from the Bank of England.
Now, they have so much money that the interest gained from the rest will easily cover the loss, so that's ok isn't it.

Isn't it?

So it's okay to steal as long as you're not stealing much? I've never understood the justification of taking something from someone who has done well because they're "rich enough."

I dread a day when I've made a lot of money from my work and people start using my creations without permission because I've "got enough money."

Palladium will never work...let's be serious for a moment...what about all those without an internet connection? They will not be able to run programs...that's a hell of a lot of users, gone.

Second, the US is not the world...it may be illegal in the US to alter the Fritz chip, programming, etc...but not everywhere else...hackers and crackers unite!

Third, it will push Linux even more...and I suspect that there would actually be lawsuits against server down-time by just about every business on the planet...imagine the nightmare of a major server outage...entire companies sitting dead in the water...billions of dollars, etc...I don't think in light of that, that very many software makers will really touch this one...unless they can be guarenteed free from liable. In that case...M$.

So stop worrying...it's not going to work. It will not work, because the people, like you and me, will mostly not accept it. And there is a choice...in fact, there are more choices, than just one, or two...or even three.

Personally, I would like to see M$ do this, and then get totally knocked off, into oblivion...and Windows would go OpenSource...that would be nice...
