All righty, this is pretty sweet. It might not be as much fun for all ya'll outside the U.S., but it's still fun.

TerraServer

quote:
TerraServer contains 3.3 tera-bytes of high resolution USGS aerial imagery and USGS topographic maps.

And if you don't want to try and find everything yourself (which takes a little while to get used to looking at the maps like that), you can automatically go to several landmarks, including the WTC, and several stadiums. I was even able to find my house, which you can zoom in close enough to count every tree in our orchard For the morbidly curious, here it is: Home Sweet Home

BTW, the Iowa Class Battleship is pretty cool too.

hehehe very cool indeed. Wasn't a problem to find my house either, even though it is submerged into a sea of houses just like it... south Brooklyn : )

hmm.....

the interesting thing is that these are archive pics, the oldest of which i found was '88.

NINETEEN EIGHTY EIGHT!

if this is the publicly viewable technology, who knows how advanced their technology actually was then - and who knows how advanced it could be now!

I prefer TerraFly myself. It has better base resolutions and more recent images. As far as ease of use... you should be able to figure it out.

Interesting ... Microsoft released the original Terraserver while I was working in Nigeria so that must be around 1997 or so. They set it up as an example of how massively scalable the SQL Server/NT4 system was. It ran for a while and then seemed to vanish (probably overwhemled by its own popularity) ...

Now it's back but without all the European stuff ... I used to be able to zoom in on Den Haag .. but now it's gone. Ah well ... I'll have to be satisfied with "I can see your house from here" instead ...

Yea, terraServer rules. I used to use it all the time at a previous job, working for the Railroad. I have found my house tons of times...

Nice stuf there, but try Earth Viewer/. Earth Viewer is good too, it's all 3D and you can zoom in right from space. I had a demo of it a while back.

You can get a the Earth Viewer demo here, but:

1) You need an nvidia Graphics card to run it (I think).
2) Fast Internet connection to download the large image files and things.
3) You need to register to have a play.

But it's worth the trouble.
