They have all kinds of different color filled oreos these days. Marketing has caught up to the food magnates. Kids in particular really go for the colored stuff. The problem is, not enough people worry about what's in the prepared foods they're eating until after they've eaten them, and then someone finds out that what they made it out of wasn't any good for you. It's scary actually.

However, I don't think that all of the blame should go on the food companies - if a consumer is that concerned about their health, that consumer should be paying more attention to what they put in their bodies. Consumers have the buying power. If enough people refuse to buy food filled with crap, maybe the people producing the food will get the message.

Iconoclast has it right - cases like this are all about the money you can get. If you can convince a food company to settle a suit for a few grand, why not? I mean, think again about the woman who put her McD's coffee between her knees and ended up winning a million $$ lawsuit because she spilled it while driving.

I bet in 10 years, we find out that the tooth whitening stuff on the market now dissolves your tooth enamel, causing faster tooth decay. I wonder how many lawsuits we'll see on that one!

It's a very simple matter - every prepared food has a list of ingredients on it.
Don't know what one of them is? Go look it up.

Not to mention....trans-fatty acids have been a concern for many people for well over a decade now. They've had al kinds of special margarines put out that don't contain them.
It's not a matter that has been left unaddressed.....

Like everything else seems to be these days, it's a big load of crap by another filthy greedy lawyer....

While I don't want to disagree with the idea that people should take responsibility for him/herself and actions, I do want to point out that the gentleman dropped the case 'because it got the publicity of the issue [he] was looking for.'
Maybe there was some, even if misplaced, altruistic motive here...

mobrul: yeah... i would agree with that...but still... people who eat oreos aren't doing so for their nutritional value!
i can say for *me* at this point in my life...i'm really not concerned with who's putting what in my food. i'm quite happy being a sheep. the things that are good for us now..will be causing cancer in 10 years....by which time i could be a vegitarian (sp?).

Non-meat foods can have just as much partially hydrogenated fats as anything else. About 40% of the foods you see on the grocery shelves have them. It increases shelf life which is the main reason for using that type of fat.

mobrul, you beat me to it. When I first heard of the lawsuit I reacted just like DL-44 and assumed it was another greedy scam. But I heard the guy who brought the suit on a radio interview two nights ago and became convinced he did this to bring the awareness of trans fat to a national level. Regardless of what I think about his tactics, I cannot deny his mission was accomplished. I'm sure he's quite satisfied at this point.

the suit has already been dropped actually, when the lawyer found out that nabisco was already looking at ways to reduce trans fat and has reduced fat oreos.

It's all food coloring anyway - the flavors are also artificial. But I believe Lacuna said:

but still... people who eat oreos aren't doing so for their nutritional value!

It's so true... colored food makers market strictly to kids, who thoroughly enjoy anything that changes colors... and remember, you're only as old as you act...
