Wow, it's a jungle out there eh?
I have looked through the FAQ's pertaining to hosting, but things seem to change very quickly with providers. I am based in the UK (if that matters) and am an almost complete novice to building and publishing webs. I made my first one about a week ago with FrontPage, so I could post Photos here. It was a great milestone for me, and the Asylum helped me gain the confidence to try.
I soon discovered that it did not support outside linking so a lot of my earlier posts must have been filled with those Red X's for other viewers. I of course still had the images in my cache so did not notice the error untill Emperor enlightened me (ty Emps).
I've trawled the net for prices and specs (although most of the terminology I do not understand).
This one seemed about the best so far from Portland UK.
For a yearly fee of £11.95
Disk Space, 25MB
Monthly Bandwidth, 250MB
Contention Ratio, 1:1000
CGI & SSI
PHP4
Escapade (ESP)
Stats, including raw log files
99.5% Service Level Guarantee
What do you think? Does this look like a good deal?
I know bandwidth is the amount of traffic allowed pm, and I think I may need more storage space than 25mb. I would be using the site as a prescence, as well as storage space for Images ect so I can link straight there.
Your thoughts would be most welcome. Oh yes price is very much a deciding factor.

Thats a very small amount of space (for lots of image hosting) and the bandwidth especially sucks, i'd recommend paying like 7 dollars a month or so (donno what it is over there) for a nice sized server space. Hell, even a domain name down the road. some bundle packages.
though if the money thing is an issue i suppose that is ok... but definately a small amount of space /bandwidth

Taobaybee: I'm sure Pugzly will be along in a minute but if not email him at pat@runningwolf.com

Pugzly: Any progress on putting up a page outlining your hosting deals?

Yup. from what I've seen Pugzly offer, runningwolf is a much better bet. The price is slightly higher, but still *extremely* reasonable, and you get built in tech support right here

No progress on it yet. I'm thinking about offering some free hosting if someone's interested in doing a site for us. We're really backed up, and work has me just overloaded with stuff....

$45 per year gets 50MB of space, 5GB of bandwidth, unlimited email accounts/forwarding/autoresponders, MySQL, PHP (with phpmyadmin) and just about everything you need, including Control Panel access.

$10 more per year doubles the space.

And we're going to be offering some reseller accounts pretty soon if you'd like to sub-lease some hosting....

Cool what do I do to arrange it with you Pugzly? I have just sent you an email, but I noticed you asked to "get in touch offline". Is that to tha address on the Running Wolf site in Wellington Drive?
Thanks for the advice pilgrims
