I will say this: it requires an exceptional amount of water to produce a pound of beef via cattle (not just the water that the cattle drink, but the water required to grow the grains that they eat)--water that could be used elsewhere if we grew our meat on trees. Granted, I would have to get over my moral qualms about not brutally slaughtering animals, but I think I could get used to it. |

Of course, let's all go back for a moment to the fact that this is the weekly world news...in case anyone actually missed that. |

So...if I'm trying to eat healthy...Does my steak from the meat tree count as a serving of fruit? I mean if we're already in there, mucking about with the genes and all, can we pass some of the good things (vitamins, minarals, fiber) of the grapefruit into the steak? |

If this is true...it'd be simply brilliant! Meat that grows on trees .. I find it very hard to believe though. |

Very creative, reitsma. Sounds like a good idea to me. I mean, what fun is it if the fruit doesn't suffer before I eat it? |

Why is everyone going on about this being a hoax? I thought that was a given... |

Simply the idea that someone would even think about splicing cattle genes and grapefruit just offends my sensibility. Wouldn't that offer a citrus-ey sort of tang to the meat/pulp? Eww... |

Just an article I had lying around my bookmarks that addresses animal slaughter in relation to food. |

Suho - I had thought at first it was a given that this was a joke (I wouldn't call it a hoax...a hoax implies someone actually trying to pass this off as truth...), but some of the responses made me question whether everyone realized that or not. =) |

Hmm... well, I suppose one could get used to it... Though I've never been one for mixing fruits into my cooking... Either before, or since I've been vegetarian. Though I'm constantly being exposed to new flavors; I guess it could work. |
