The meat tree could work, but a) I won't believe it until it has some wider media coverage and b) I'm wondering if there will be any long-term sideeffects.

Err umm.. Yeah.

I honestly don't know what to think. I doubt it'll be accepted by the public with open arms though, at least not for a while. I think eating meat from a tree is a bit of a stretch for most people. Although, this has more benefit than making bananas taste like strawberries or whatever it was scientists were tying to do with genetically engineered fruit some years ago.

I will say this: it requires an exceptional amount of water to produce a pound of beef via cattle (not just the water that the cattle drink, but the water required to grow the grains that they eat)--water that could be used elsewhere if we grew our meat on trees. Granted, I would have to get over my moral qualms about not brutally slaughtering animals, but I think I could get used to it.

Of course, let's all go back for a moment to the fact that this is the weekly world news...in case anyone actually missed that.

But of course, it's a fascinatingly repulsive concept, and is the type of story that used to prompt me to buy a copy of the weekly world news once a week way back when (like, before the www came around with it's easy access....).

So...if I'm trying to eat healthy...Does my steak from the meat tree count as a serving of fruit? I mean if we're already in there, mucking about with the genes and all, can we pass some of the good things (vitamins, minarals, fiber) of the grapefruit into the steak?

If so I'll be eating meatfuit steak at every meal. Yum.

suho - i have the perfect solution for you. Fruit salad - born and bred.

we can start a cattle farm, where the animals are made of fruit. Of course, the first would be an antelope that tastes like cantaloupe, followed closely by some ape grapes, which we could wash down with a nice glass of freshly squeezed orangutan juice.

If this is true...it'd be simply brilliant! Meat that grows on trees .. I find it very hard to believe though.

Very creative, reitsma. Sounds like a good idea to me. I mean, what fun is it if the fruit doesn't suffer before I eat it?

Again, seriously...Weekly World News.

It's a tabloid about made-up stories. UFO abductions, 200-pound babies, "I had Bigfoot's baby," that sort of thing...

(When people actually believe there's such things as meat trees, I begin to think you really can fool all of the people all of the time.)

Why is everyone going on about this being a hoax? I thought that was a given...

I still like the idea of having to hunt down and kill my fruit, though.

Simply the idea that someone would even think about splicing cattle genes and grapefruit just offends my sensibility. Wouldn't that offer a citrus-ey sort of tang to the meat/pulp? Eww...

Suho - I think I need to schedule some shock therapy...

Just an article I had lying around my bookmarks that addresses animal slaughter in relation to food.
http://www.wildlifedamagecontrol.com/animalrights/leastharm.htm

Nutrient-wise... beef has many more vitamins than most fruits, so as far as that's concerned, it's actually better for you. It's all the other stuff associated with it that detracts from that.

I think I'd just find the entire concept of having to peel my beef a bit bizzaro. So... what do you think the seeds look like inside?? heh

Suho - I had thought at first it was a given that this was a joke (I wouldn't call it a hoax...a hoax implies someone actually trying to pass this off as truth...), but some of the responses made me question whether everyone realized that or not. =)

Now, the big question - would fruit-cows still get hoof and mouth disease? Would they still carry e-coli?

Hmm... well, I suppose one could get used to it... Though I've never been one for mixing fruits into my cooking... Either before, or since I've been vegetarian. Though I'm constantly being exposed to new flavors; I guess it could work.
