Was doing some poking around and noticed somthing I hadn't seen before. Looks like somebody ripped my Brush Making tutorial in a different language. Something like that. Kind of confused. Don't even know what language it's in.
http://www.graphics.ru/tutor/53/
What I'm asking for:
1. What language is it in? Is it Russian?
2. Any bi-linguals out there interested in acting as a translator between myself and the ripper?
Please, no nasty e-mails or flooding forums (if there are any). I'm not exactly mad, but I would like to know what's going on and find a way to resolve this as nicely as possible.
Hey, look at this:
http://www.graphics.ru/tutor/52/
http://www.graphics.ru/tutor/46/
Maybe I should be getting mad.
I'm not sure just yet.
What ya'll think?

wj: Good spot - our man for this job is Ruski. I'll drop him a note.
They give proper credit but (at least as far as the GN stuff is concerned) copyright remains with the author so its up to them - I'll pass it on.

OK I have dropped a note into the GN with my thoughts on the issue:
http://development.gurusnetwork.com/discussion/thread/2092/
I'd rather work with them and host a copy of the tutorial at the GN (and retroactively give them permission).
If anyone knows of any other 'unauthorised' foreign language translations of GN tutorials (a while back a Chinese inmate mentioned that there were translations of GN and Handson tutorials doing the rounds) as I know I'd be interested in looking into hosting copies of them too.

I wouldn't be surprised if more ripped/translated tutorials and articles are in there.
I've only had a few minutes to poke around the site some more.
This looks oddly familiar, possibly Elf Wood:
http://www.graphics.ru/articles/17/
I totally agree, Emps: work with instead of against. Well, at least in this case because it does look more innocent or well intented than other things that I've seen.
For now, I'm going to wait for other GN'ers and Asylumites to chime in.
Gotta go. I'm out the door.

Hm... looks like they have some of mine as well.
Know what though?... i think i'm ok with it because 1, i get a lot of email asking if my stuff can be translated and used for other sites (not sure if this specific person asked though), and 2, at least they're giving credit. That is first-n-foremost important.
So... i'm ok with this.

Okay, this is what I'm leaning towards:
1. Urge him/her/them to ask permission for current and future tutorials
2. Urge him/her/them to apologize for not asking for permission for current tutorials
For me, that's more then enough. Hell, if he (whomever) had asked me, I would gladly have consented and given a link on my site. I'm sure damn near everybody would have consented. After all, we are looking at more hits from a new demographic (English literal Russians, heh).
Emp, if all goes well, he might even do some more of the GN as atonement or ammends or something.
Bugs, I never thought I would be ripped in any capacity - politely or otherwise. Looks like I'm moving up in the world. Now that's a kick in the head for a goofball like myself.
Going back to sitting on my thumbs, pending what Ruski has to say.

wj: I'm leaning towards:
1. Opening negotiations into hosting his translations at the GN.
2. Seeing if he wants to do some more.
3. Retroactively giving them permission.
There are big cultural differences when it comes to copyright, etc. and he did the right thing by crediting the authors (and there must be an awful lot of sites out there which have the same tutorials and don't credit them) its just a pity they didn't ask first.

Yeah, cultural differences.
Hadn't really thought of that, and not because I'm an American.
Even with the 'net at my finger tips, I still live in my own little chasm.
But that's a whole different can of worms.
Cheers, mate.

I we don't find Ruski in the next I'd suggest we put our heads together and come up with a joint email to send them. Is that cool with you?

I don't think you'll have any luck getting hold of Ruski in the near future. I think he is of to some pre college art program.

Veneficuz: OK thanks
We can consult and see what we can come up with then - as people have said if they can translate from English to Russian they must be doing OK. If the translations prove a little off then we can make changes.

Actually, the credit links were there from the very beginning. I think the issue was that permission was not requested first. As Emps mentioned above, though, considering the attitudes toward copyright law, etc. in some of these countries, I think the credit links are quite impressive.

Go ahead and send on behalf of GN.
I just needed some time, and it's looking like I'm ready to let it go.
If I think about in the coming weeks, I'll drop him a note of my own. I'll probably even drop a link to this translation once I get my updates finished.
