Happy birthday MC Escher!

I had a chance several years ago to take in an exhibit of his work at the National Museum of Modern Art in DC. Some friends of mine and I made the trip just to see it - the largest collection of his work in one place ever, at the time. He has done some really nice landscapes in addition to the wacky stuff...
They appear to have added this virtual tour to their website...

I like Escher very much, my mom loves him, we have several posters of his work at home...

I love particularly three of his paintings... The one being reminded on the Google page (a hand drawing another hand drawing the first hand) is very particular, I like it very much. It symbolizes very well his work.

However, my favorite always was the one he didn't finish, he let the center of the painting to be blank because it was too complex to imagine. On this topic, I've heard that recently scientists completed the picture with the help of computers. Bha.. I think it's better with a blank

Edit : Ahhh while surfing on websites related to Escher's work, I came across one I didn't know... And I love it. I'm pretty sure many artists got their inspiration from it...

Don't think I've seen any of his art before, at least I didn't take notice of his name then. But now I've been enlightened, his work is faboulus

MS - you hadn't seen that drawing before? It's always been one of my favorites... Escher was so talented... and he had such a unique way of viewing the world.

In the movie "Labyrinth", by Jim Henson, one of the final scenes is in a room designed to look like his "Stairs" drawing. The whole room rotated and changed so that the actors appeared to using all the different angles of stairs and platforms... One of my favorite movie scenes...

I knew what it was the second I saw the image. Defiantly one of my fav google logo's too.

Take a look at the picture of himself holding a shiny ball ... now think on this ...

It's worth noting (and it's a point which makes his work even more phenomenal) that most of the monochrome works are, in face, woodcuts. So he didn't just draw with such fascinating precision, he then went and cut it into the surface of a block of hardwood with a sharp knife and make prints of it - and that's what you see nowadays - reproductions of the prints !!

Did Escher do woodblock prints or lithograph prints? I thought it was lithographs... they are much easier to detail than wood is... You can get lots of really fine lines in a lithograph print, because you basically transfer the drawing to the stone, and then etch it.

edit: nope - now that I go and look, he used woodcuts, linoleum prints, as well as lithographs... Still impressive, any way you look at it.
