Today, I woke up to the sound of helicopters and police sirens.

Now, to some of you this may be a daily thing, but I live in Lawnton, Queensland, Australia -- a pokey little suburb in the middle of other pokey little suburbs. Stuff like this just doesn't happen here. Well, until today. Apparently someone has escaped form the local police station, someone dangerous enough to warrant several helicopters to be called in and I'm seeing more police cars, motorcycle cops and paddy wagons (<- probably an Australian term, just means a small truck like police vehicle) than civilian vehicles on the roads at the moment.

Even then I went for a short walk wondering what all the commotion was about and an unmarked detective?s car pulled me over to ask if I'd seen anyone matching a vague description. Which is were I learnt what had happened. After that I decided a pleasant stroll amongst the helicopters and police cars probably wasn't the best Idea (Hey, I'd just woken up, give me a break here) so I wandered back home again.

I can still hear the helicopters circling around. They've been out there for a good hour or two now. Now, I know we don't have any helicopters appointed to any kind of organisation in this area so they've obviously been called in from a fair ways away. This person obviously isn't your run of the mill drunk that was thrown in the lockup overnight to sober up.

Hmmm... anyways, beyond that there's no real point to this post. Just thought I'd share my morning. I'll let you know if they catch him. It should be on the nightly news here.

Lawnton is about an hours drive north of Brisbane, and the only reason I know is because I'm in the middle of it. The Helicopters are gone now but I did see some news vans about so it'll probably be on the news.

I'd be that scared too if that many police were after me

Did they know what colour his shorts were initially?

nifty.

Actually, as far as I know, Paddy wagon is an american term, stemming from the fact that the NYC police force was almost exclusively Irish for quite some time (since nobody else would hire tham, and a lot of them were rather large and brutish....)

So any more info? Was it on the news yet? I'm terrible about knowing what time it is relative to my local time so if my question is really recent to when you posted... nevermind. I'll be patient

It was on the news every now and then throughout the day on channel 9 but there's nothing about it on their news website ( http://news.ninemsn.com.au ). Apparently he was only wanted for theft, but I doubt they'd spend that much money and man power trying to catch a thief. I suspect he did over a couple of cops trying to get away or he managed to nick off with one of their guns or something. The helicopters kept coming back throughout the day and were still around well into the night.

It's the following day now and they still haven't caught him but for the most part, the search in the immediate area has been called off. Several hours after the event the whole suburb was just crawling with police, they even set up a few roadblocks at certain points and were patrolling the train stations according to some of the people I've talked to -- seems quite excessive for a thief IMHO. I think the police aren't telling the media the whole story, probably because they don't want to admit that they let loose a very dangerous man.

Although, even though this person is still at large, it seems as if it's mostly blown over now. You know how quickly people like to forget things like this. Tomorrow everyone will be back to complaining about the tax rates or some such.
