Ya know, I am not sure if this has been asked . . I did some digging in the FAQ and could not find anything related. Of course all the inmates share a common interest in graphics- which isn't always the same job as what earns their rent/mortgage/food. I thought it would be interesting to find out.

So I will start:

- worked in advertising as a Media Planner for 3 years, switched careers to freelance web design, now work full time in the Production department of an investment firm in New York City. Been there 2 years, I'd like to move on. Not sure where . . .

and you?

[edit] geez, just realized "career" may not have been the best subject title. Not really your career, but what pays your bills.[/edit]

I work for a pharmacy automation systems company. We manufacture robotic and computer systems that help pharmacies with mundane tasks like counting pills, labeling vials, and retrieval and storage of drugs. We also sell workflow management systems that help a pharmacy with accuracy and tracking. We make electronic signature pads like the ones you sign at Best Buy, Target, etc only these pads are designed to track a person's acceptance of a drug (you know when you sign that little receipt thing at the pharmacy?) and acceptance of the new HIPPA and NOPP guidelines.

I am a trainer for them. I travel to pharmacies that have bought our equipment and teach them how to use our systems. I make workflow recommendations to help them become more efficient and sort of act like a consultant. I also stick around after training to troubleshoot the systems and make sure they run like they're supposed to.

That's us.

very nice krets. Sounds like an interesting job. I guess I was pretty brief in my description- I am tired. Close to 2 years ago I was hired into a branch of the NYC based firm. My boss wanted someone with marketing experience and web design knowledge- he wanted to impress his bosses by building a website and intranet for the branch- without having to use the firm's IT resources. Well, since I was the only guy who knew anything about web design- and the only other person supporting the project was my boss . . . both projects fell thru after a few months. My only other option was to learn Quark and Illustrator and design/update marketing materials. 1 year later, 60% of my branch gets laid off. My boss gets promoted and I get moved into Manhattan at the headquarters. New Art Director separates people with art degrees = designers. Non art degrees = production. So, now I am learning production 9prepping files for print). I want out.

After the 2 year mark in September I will begin looking for something else. A few years ago I applied, presented, and was accepted at a computer training school here in NY. I actually began my current job right away so I had to put off teaching . . .I was thinking of taking it up again- teaching nights. Learn to teach with a topic I am comfortable with- PowerPoint, then Excel and Word. Then HTML . . . maybe open some doors that way.

In a nut shell that?s me.

I guess that's also, in general, my current career path, but I have tried out a few careers at one time or another during the past 55 years - Chemist, Sports Centre Manager, Computer Programmer, System Administrator, DBA and Technical Support Manager have all featured somewhere. My eventual goal is to sail off around the world and keep on going till I die.

As for my "career" - well... it's not a career... just a job. I work in the Cashiers Office at UNCGreensboro. Answer phones, adjust student accounts, console students who get cancelled because their financial aid got screwed up... Bring parents down a peg when they think that the University is ripping them off when the state raises the rates every year... You could almost call it public relations.
On the up side, I get 2 courses a year paid for by the school, and that goes a long way towards finishing the degree in anthropology I started 10 years ago... and state benefits too!

Full time student, senior (96 hours done, ~36 to go), working on a double major in Comp Sci and Math, but thinking of changing it to a concurrent 2nd BS.
I'm getting about $3000/semester in scholarships, which is just enough to pay for tuition and books, etc. plus have a few bucks left to set aside for a computer.
As far as work is concerned, I've been hauling hay for various people since I was about 13, which is good for spare cash, but not enough to live on.
The beginning of the last fall semester I started working in the CS Research Lab on campus, mostly as a network administrator (ie. I spend 15 hours a week complaining about how M$'s software never wants to cooperate, then the other 5 hours on research projects and general lab work).

However, career plans are more like this: Move to Colorado (or anywhere else there's a high concentration of ski resorts) when I get the chance, and work doing anything that allows me to ski all season. Ideally, I'll get into back country skiing (freeheel skiing is amazing), possibly into some filming, or find someone who's into the filming part and would let me ski for them, or just about anything along those lines...
I don't suppose there's anyone here that could point me towards someone they know or anything that could give me a head start possibly? Unfortunately I grew up in the middle of nowhere, and don't know anyone anywhere near any resorts... ::shrugs::

I work for a US cable channelTechTV (there's TechTV Canada but it's a seperate company). Right now I'm the lead engineer of their Interactive Television Group. So basically I make interactive television applications. The two main ones are on Direct TV using something called wink, if anyone with DirecTV seen a little "i" pop up, those applications on TechTV are mine. We also have a Virtual Channel on the Cablevision system in New Jersey, Conneticut and Long Island. Other than that our group also packages Video to be used for Video On Demand in some other cable systems. It's a relatively new field but it's a cool area where I get to work with a bunch of different technologies.

Before that I was the senior production engineer of the TechTV website doing most of the front end work. I also worked briefly for the excite@home (I worked for the @home ISP side) doing a level of technical support, and I started off about 6 years ago working for EA (video games) maintaining their tech support website as well as tech support and game testing.

Forget the resorts and follow me north; north to Alaska and more untracked bottomless powder than you can imagine! If you love to play in the mountains and don't mind earning your turns, it's heaven on earth.

20 minutes in any direction from Anchorage and you have access to true wilderness adventure. Anchorage is a great place to be a Ski/Snowboard/Climbing Bum. If you work through the summer, you can play all winter... Of course, I've been known to carve turns in mid-July every now and then.

And if you are willing to take a few hours of driving, your choices increase exponentially. The Talkeetna Range, the Alaska Range, and let's not forget Valdez.

So come on up! And when you arrive, tell 'em Norm sent ya.

In late august, I'll hit the 3 years milestone as a "senior" web developper in an advertising company doing online and offline communication. It's my first job, but I've asked to be dismissed in september for several reasons. Then I'll take a little break, and try to work in freelance. If it doesn't pay the bills within 6-9 months I'll try to find a position in a web agency or another advertising company.

On the other side, I'd like to code some games on mobile phones and/or gameboy advance. It might be the first real turn in my short career. BTW, if some have some informations about the market and requirement to apply for such a job. Actually, all I know is that I'm not scared to code on those platforms may it be in Java, C or Assembly.

Career LOL...

I've been doing lots of stuff during the years...
I'm a certified carmechanic (never worked as it though).
Has been at the swedish railroads for 16 years doing in order:
- Driving forklifts
- Building railroads
- Working the internal printshop
- In charge of the income budget for that shop
- Moved to system management for a nation wide mainframe system
- A 4 year project converting all paper documents to electronic documents
- Specified the first intranet for electronic document distribution SJ with tie ins to personell systems and SAP.
- Jumped ship in 2000 to a startup (Netmolecule) where I worked as webcoder, tech sales, project leader, configuration manager and more until that went tits up in 2001.
- Worked a year for Integris as senior webdeveloper/technical project leader, then they closed that department in April 2002.
- Unemployed and did freelance work in project form until August when I got hired by the hour by Cats and here's where I am right now, work swinging from 60 - 200 hours a month...
Somewhat freelancing without a company of my own one might say...

Don't know if that's a career, but it pays the bills.
