Nothing cures a Canada day hangover like waking up at a strangers place to the sound of winning the Olympics! I do wish we could do something about those anti-Canadian protestors, who are the only reason for such a close vote (56-53 over Pyeongchang, S. Korea). I can surely see them becoming a problem as 2010 draws closer.

Apparently just the people who live here. There were so many of them, that Vancouver had a referendum, just to decide whether or not to run.

Sounds like people who A) have too much time on their hands; B) have it too good in life, that the idea of not hosting the Olympics seems one worth fighting for; or C) all of the above.

^ Not quite that simple. The current Gov't in BC, where the games will be held, is just now gutting many gov't services, displacing thousands and thousands of workers. Many are of the opinion that the games will be staged on the backs of the poor and middle class.
Upgrading the hiway to Whistler, where the alpine events will be held, will cost close to a billion dollars...and the logistics of moving people to that venue will be a nightmare. The other events will be staged in Vancouver.
The 'average' person cannot now afford much of anything at Whistler. A beer, for example, can run you 7 dollars. By the time the games arrive it will most certainly be for those with very deep-pockets.

Polling shows reasonably strong support for the games in the lower mainland (Vancouver) area but support in what the Premier calls 'the heartland' is not not really there.

Very political. Very expensive. Always makes for a great controversy.

Huh. I had no idea there were actual issues. Some people just dislike anything that inconveniences them. But this sounds like they have some real grievances.

Okay... let 'em protest!

but if the decision is made, then shut up or move, I think... I hate it when people protest just 'cause they can't do anything else..

It's funny, because I know some Koreans were psyched about the possibility of the Olympics being held in Pyeongchang. I translated many glowing articles about Pyeongchang as well. I kept saying that we didn't stand a snowball's chance in Hell (haha, I made a funny!) of getting picked, but no one believed me. I'm surprised the vote was as close as it was. Those must be some pretty potent demonstrators. Maybe we should import some of them--Korean demonstrations have been getting kind of weak as of late.

Anyway, congrats to the entire country of Canada.
