I've lost both Hard drives.
I was here at the Asylum when the BSD appeared. Thinking it as the usual bs, rebooted. ''PRIMARY HDD ERROR"
A few more reboots..same thing so into the CMOS. Auto detect cannot find either HDD. I entered the appropriate info under "USER DEFINED" Cylinder Head Sector. (glad I wrote down that info) but still nothing.
Both HD's however are apparently spinning... you can 'feel' and hear it on C: and feel it on D:... have both out on the desk but still connected.

So any help would be appreciated. I'm using the neighbours 'puter and will check back later... meantime I'm considering a big stick. =)
thnks

Forgot to add that I can get to A:\ and CD which now is D:\ use to be F:\
but can't get to either HD from either of those.

- put it on the secondary ide channel
try again

- take another disk to check if the boards
ide controller still running

- set bios defaults
and watch the result

ok... a bit of joy but not much. It would appear the MB is ok but the 40gig HD is toast. Disconnecting the 40g from the daisychain the system will boot when 'user defined' info is entered into the CMOS and the system will do consecutive reboots. Hook up the 40g in the same configuration nothing at all and the 'user defined' info in CMOS for Primary has been replaced with 'Not Installed.'
Also changing jumpers on the 40g to Master and changing the ribbon and power connectors 'nothing' and when I put the stethescope on the HD there's nothing... no sound at all. I apparently was not hearing what I thought I was hearing. So that would seem like the end of that drive. What do you think?

Many years of 'stuff' gone. No CD burner thus no backups. Nothing except text files fit on a floppy. Gone gone gone. Very discouraging.

I've been reading one of my monster repair manuals and it says that the 'logic board' on a HD can be replaced.
Has anyone replaced on of those?

What I can't seem to find is how to determine if the spindle motor or head is screwed. Don't want to try the logic board if either of those is screwed.

yes, it could be replaced,
but it's bound to be more expensive than a new hdd, and I'd not even bet on getting all my data back.

btw, you have tried another cable, right?, just to make sure it's not some 2 usd part.
and modern bioses will virtually always be able to detect the hdd in auto, if it's alright.

Are the two hdds attached to the same cable?
Are they jumpered correctly (maybe a jumper fell of, unlikely as that sounds. I once spent an hour looking for the error of my ways, till I found that one jumper I was using was just the little plastic hull, without the conducting wire inside!)

TP: Yes, both HD's are on the same cable but I don't think that's the problem as the (apparently) toasted HDD will not even spin up when it's swapped out for the working HDD.. and Yes I changed the jumpers. =) Like I said there's no hint of any sound/noise...zip. none... 'this parrot's dead.' =)
thnx

Despite how this will sound, I dont think your dumb

try the Molex, different power cable, mebbe just a thought. I bet u wish its that simple anyway If it aint spinnin at all gettin it fixed maybe as simple as a new motor, unlikey and expensive tho

I opened up my hard disk as a last ditch effort when got fuct, if you do the same, really DO NOT so much as breath on the platter, its uncleanable and picks up perfect imprints of fingertips on the lightest touch.
