I have just become aware of this, so I thought I would share:
"A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to remotely compromise a computer running Microsoft® Windows® and gain complete control over it".
You can get the patch here Microsoft Downloads

Yup, sounds like the 30 other patches M$ has released under the same explanation...

I don't even really bother to download security patches anymore, because I rely upon 3rd party programs to catch viruses and hackers (etcetera). Tiny is good firewall (also monitors ports, lets you permit/deny activity), Norton works book, and Adware. I feel more confident relying on those than I do relying on M$ security patches.

I received the alert through a DMXzone neswletter to-day so I thought "better warned twice, than not at all" so posted it up.

[edit] I have just checked my system settings to find I had turned off automatic update a while back when I was playing the "American Army" online game, and forgotten to turn it back on!!
Now that I have turned it back on I find I am downloading about 14 updates. This is going to take yonks to download
wanders off mumbling "dial up" bah "pidgeon post", mumble mutter

Last i heard microsoft's patch release schedule was Thursday night so Admins cuold update the computers on Friday. Seems to be some truth to this From what i have seen. Though an OS with an weekly update schedule for you to check makes you thinkk it still needs some work.

A friendly reminder to up date Windows is nice to have . I still keep updating windows in hopes of better security and stability. I hope at least the security bit is working here.

Thanks for the kind thoughts Xpirex (Don't you mean paternal instincts btw)
Update completed.
I remember turning "auto update" off a while back as it had the nasty habit of trying to upload stuff when I was in the middle of an online game, resulting in tragedy.
The ubiquitous "somebody" must have forgotten to remind me to switch it back on again, heh.

"A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to remotely compromise a computer running Microsoft® Windows® and gain complete control over it"

Well, you already knew that when you bought that PC with Windows on it, didn't you?

And if I'm not mistaken, Micro$oft releases patches on a daily basis. This isn't anything new, and it doesn't seem any more serious than, uh... every other security flaw found in Windows.

You can set WinXP to just warn you that there is an update available and not to download it (or them) until you say so. Then, when you want, start the update by clicking in an icon that will show up in your notification area. When the download is complete, it will ask you kindly if you want to install it and you can say yes or no or later, also by clicking in the same notification icon.
This is my default configuration.

Hahahaha.. Taobaybee, up till now I have consciously avoided the "WHO I AM" threads cos I dont really want to see pics of people or know what sex they are right now. It might spoil the beautiful image I am building of of people from their words only... hope i did not offend though.

Xpirex, Not at all dood, I prefer not to get bogged down with the A/S/L thing , and all that baggage as well. Although I do have a disturbing image of the Emperor in my head that I am waiting for Master Suho to help me erase

[edit] Thanks as well viol for the input.
