I know I am new here and well, A lot of people may read this and be like "Who the hell are you!?" but I have never skinned or even attempted to skin a bulliten board and it'd be a neat thing for me to try and do. Question is this, Since I am sixteen with a way over-protective father/mother, Is there anyway someone could give me some hosting (ya know, a subdomain, 10megs of space, some bandwidth and mysql w/ support for .php)? Id appreciate this so I can skin a forum just to learn something new. If anyone will help, thanks.

Pardon me for laughing out loud but:

seems like a bit much to be giving away for free. Especially since most of us pay for packages like this.

I am not aware of any reason why you would need to have a server on the net to experment.

Simply install Apache, PHP, and mySQL on your machine, and then go to town with phpBB

You will learn a lot more that way. There are good instructions all over the net just search google.

For the truely lazy, you could find a all in one server package, that would ease installing. I like FoxServ.

yes, a local apache installation, with the appropriate add ons for perl, php and mysql, will work for most web-software you'll find,
this is even more true for a all-in-one package like foxserv.
Plus, you don't have to ftp up the files all the time.

Basically what they said ^^^^^^^^^^^^ See this FAQ for help:

:FAQ: How do I install AMP (Apache/PHP/Mysql) on my Windows computer for offline testing?

That way you can play with it to your hearts content

Portland specifically don't allow you to instal forums.

step 1) Get some sleep. Try again when you have your full mental capacity to aid you.

This isn't the type of thing that can be expalined with a simple 1,2,3. You need to read the documentation, make sure you have all the necessary components, and double check that you have followed all the instructions.

Especially since you're talking about various different installations, and haven't made it clear which one you are having trouble with.

Sleep only if you can, Which I cannot. Ok the problem is the fact I installed that program thing and it loaded everything onto my Win98SE computer and Apache and MySQL work, However the PHP doesnt. I cant open .PHP files for some reason on my computer even though PHP is on it. Did I not set it up correctly? Appearently it is working though because I can access it at http://localhost/phpMyAdmin and such. So I dont know. Erm.

Did you follow all the instructions? the PHP files MUST be under the phpdev\www directory (if oyu're using PHPDev...which you should be) if the server is going ot pick them up.

BD: The installation should have some test files so you can make sure you have things working - are they working. If they are then the problem is with the forum if they aren't then it is your Apache installation. If it is the latter then have you started Apache? The server needs to be running first before PHP will work.

About the free hosting you're looking for...

A subdomain and 10megs isn't much to ask (heck, 10mb is pretty damn modest), and you can probably find that for free, but when you start asking for PHP, ASP, CGI, SQL, etc. it's gonna cost you.

I haven't found any *good* hosts that will let you have server-side scripting for free..

The only ones that do so (and I'm talking port5 and brinkster), have lousy servers, and brinkster doesn't even allow FTP.

You need extra fiddling to actually get php files to process and open in a broswer when you click on them. Instead open up your browser of choice and type "http://localhost/". See what you get then. Then try looking at some files that you have put in the appropriate folder, e.g. "http://localhost/test.php". I think that may be the misunderstanding.
