Ok I have been having some serious download problems. When I am downloading, say a .EXE, The file is around 33 megabites. Well as I download it, Around different times (8megs, 12megs), ect, It will say it finishes but it doesn't finish and I have to restart the download. This is annoying with a 56K modem. I have tried different sources and everything and this continues to happen. Does anyone know why and how to fix this?

Get a program which allows you to pause/continue downloads. I use a Mac mostly so I couldn't suggest one for the Windows side of the world, but good choices for Mac: Interarchy for OS 9 and Speed Download for OSX

Interarchy = freeware I think.. SD is shareware.

Try this. It's a free downloader that enebles you to resume downloading from where you left off even if your connection get severed or an earthquake takes place in your town.

According to my own observations and experience with similar problems, this is not due to a problem in your system but instead to a problem in the server from which you are downloading the file. Try the following:
- using a software like GetRight or FlashGet; they do solve your problem, if the server, on the other side, allows resuming (I use FlashGet);
- downloading in a different time, when the Internet is supposed to be less crowded; you may have a very good connection but the other side may be beyond their (small) bandwidth capacity;
- it's also possible, but a pain in the arse, that you intentionally stop the download by cancelling it, after some time - before it stops by itself - and then, without doing anything else in your computer, click the link to start the same download again; if you are using IE and if the other side accepts resuming, it will restart from the point you have cancelled it; by acting so, you are manually doing what a GetRight or FlashGet do, but you have to use regular intervals to cancel and resume the download.

33 megs on a 56k connection?

That's a pretty large pill to swallow, don't you think?

It depends on the point of view. If all you have is a 56k modem, you can download a 33MB file in around 3 hours. If you want too much the file, what's the harm in waiting this long?
If you have a broadband that can download such a file in 30 seconds, than you will find a 56 k almost unfeasible.
Just point of view.

Well, I've experienced 56k for myself, and 33megs sounds like an overnight job to me...

When I used a 56k modem (until aug/02), my connection was always established at 44kb. I don't remember having anything better than this. Then, at this speed, my average real speed was around 3.0 to 3.3 kbps. That's around 10-11 MB per hour, or, 3 hours for a 33MB file. I have many times downloaded files of this size, or even bigger, using my good old 56k winmodem and, as someone already stated, no big deal, and my math was always to think in 10MB per hour as a good speed.
Of course that many times I was not able to get a 3+ kb per second rate, but I usually downloaded big files late at night, when the Internet was a lot better.
Here in the US I get to know what is a real broadband connection, that can indeed download a 33MB file in less than 30 seconds (depending on the other side) and so, when I get back to Brasil, I won't stand using my old modem again. I will sign some better Internet connection, something like 128 or 256kb per second alternative, since anything better than this, in my country, is still very expensive.

By the way, if now I have broadband and I don't need to wait 3 hours to download a 33MB file, on the other hand, when I want to render a 30 minute movie that I made using Vegas, I have to leave my computer working for around 2 hours.
So, I still have bottlenecks in my system and I guess I will never get rid of them.

I downloaded 280mb at 3kb/s about a year ago, took weeks of leavin' it on at night, was worth it though, eh, trial software.

33 mb even with ISDN (slightly better than 56k) takes a lot of time. Kinda depends of the server as well.
